View Full Version : broke-in guts. Worth it?

I was curious if FMI thought about making and selling guts that were already broke-in. The reason I ask is because of other companies, Tim Grounds and Death Row Calls, seem to be doing well with selling these pre-molded guts. I didn't know if FMI had thought about molding their guts to a set of Jeff's, Big Sean, Cole, etc.
The second half of my curiousity is whether or not these "broke-in" guts are worth the price/performance, or is it more beneficial to do the breaking-in yourself? I am not trying to compare FMI to these other companies in any stretch of the imagination because I have a SMH and a SHOWTIME that I got not to long ago and I wouldn't trade for anything. Again, just curious!

I will get flamed for this as I usually do, but I think they are well worth the money. You get a deeper goosier tone with them than with new guts.
I honestly doubt Foiles will take the time to mold a set but I may be wrong.

You are right WhiteFeather, I think probably on both counts.....if I didn't have a couple good sets or wore in guts, I would definitely buy a set of the wore in guts....probably the clucker ones from GK cuz they have the same reeds as we have. But you can't beat a set of wore in guts, they make all calls sound at their peak.......especially in a Coles call (poly or acrylic) they make that little call the most versatile calls out there!!

ok. With this being said, I have a showtime and a smh and if I was going to by a set of broke in guts, then where do I need to look and what is the cost?

Foiles doesnt offer any at this point, the best suggestion I can give you is replace the shaved reeds with unshaved ones and go to town on the call. Once broke in you'll have just what you want and you can put the shaved reeds back in then.

There are several makers of broke in guts:
Grounds has the Triple Crown Guts (50 bucks from Grounds website)
Saunders has Game Used Guts (????? Not sure on the price)
GK has two sets, the edge guts and clucker guts (30 bucks from Trader Outdoors)

I took my broken in guts from my SMH and put them in my showtime, and that showtime had to of been one of the greatest calls I've blown, it make a huge difference. Makes the lows a lot easier, just pure goose.
Broke in guts went back into the SMH and the SMH went back to my dad and the Showtime got sold. With normal guts it was just to hard to run, no matter how I tuned it.
They are well worth the money and make a can perform a lot better especially on the low end trick note work.
Just ordered the new Hunters Magic call, and its got a mean low end with a soft train moan, very nice even with the $200 price tag.

I heard this before....whats the advantage to doing with a non-shaven reed? Stiffer reed = easier to create grooves?

The unshaved reeds don't lose the stiffness like a shaved reed. They take a little getting used to but once you do they sound better.

i have the gk b/i edge guts in my comp killer.. its SO much easier to do low end stuff on and really soft honks, clucks, spits, trains etc. I think they are worth every penny.

Thanks for the info. The main reason I have not bought a set of broke-in guts is b/c I wasn't sure if the guts from other call makers would fit the bore size of Foiles calls.(SMH/SHOWTIME) And I don't have money to throw around in HOPES that they would work. I will however try the unshaved reed in my call. Thanks for the input.
anyone have a pic of broken in guts?

I'd be willing to bet they will look like the molded ones. Only green.
They all pretty much look the same

Whats the difference between the edge and clucker guts?
I believe the difference is the shape of the reed used to break them in. The cluckers were obviously broke in using a standard clucker reed and the EDGE guts were broke in with one of GK's reed designs, E-3 or E-4.
