Hi, my name is Adam. I am looking into buying a Foiles call, but I am not sure as to which one is best for the type of geese that pass through my area. We have many hard migrators, with a few residents, and some small pairs or groups that come through. So which call could work the "Mile High" geese and low geese. I am only hunting Canada Geese on my farm. Also, the farm I am hunting next season has a few small ponds and other water features and the other farm I hunt has a shallow pond also. I'm not totally sure if that plays a factor in the type of call I should buy. I was thinking of a SM Honker, MeatGrinder, Showtime, or Market Hunter. I was even recommended the High Plains Honker. What is my best bet? I want to make this a good purchase because there are no Foiles dealers near me and I have to buy off the internet.

You can never go wrong with a plain SMH. The market hunter is also a good choice. For those mile high birds I would look into the cackler. I dont have one yet but I have blown them and they are awsome, insanely loud! On one of Jeffs calling DVDs he says that there are guides up in Canada that all they use is the cackler. I would start with a SMH though. Im sure you will purchase more in the future. I only had planned on buyin 2 of his calls and I now own 5 with more on my wish list. All of the Foiles calls are amazing and no matter what you choose to go with you wont be let down.
The only other thing would be to actually get out and try one at a Cabelas, Bass Pro, or other sporting goods store. That will make the final decision easier for you.

The Strait Meat Cackler isa great choice for talking to those "mile high" migrators. The SMH is definately a great place to get started in the Foiles Line up of great calls. For the needs you havedescribed my opinion would be that the SMH and SMC or MH and SMC would both be a great one, two combination.

If you need to talk to mile high birds the best call would be the showtime because it is so loud. But if you are just getting started with Foiles calls or short reeds in general start with the SMH. You can learn all the notes fairly easy with Jeff's video Calling Geese 2.0. I just purchased the SM Cackler on Saturday and I can't put it down. I think it is going to be extremely deadly for early seaon. It will also be a very good call for those migrators because it has volume as well and I think it might be the easiest call to blow. I've got my SMH tuned to cover the lower ends and the SM Cackler is a higher pitched call.

Thanks for the help, I am sort of newer to short reeds, I used to use my grandfather's old Olt 77. I only used that because the guys I hunted with were really good at calling and my job was to get them to notice the spread and when they approached the other guys took over. I started using a Sean Mann and I'll still use it until I get some SM calls. I first heard about SM when everybody at school started using them and one of my friends won the Maryland Jr. Goose Calling Championship and my other friend took third using Strait Meat calls. I was definently looking into buying the SMH and then Cackler, but I'll see how our new hunting grounds are when it comes to hunting season and I'll decide which one is best.
