I got a female yellow out of one of hawks litters this year and its approachin the time where you would get a dog fixed if you were goin to do it. Im just not sure if i want to. i have heard it ruins some hunting dogs. shes always in a pen locked up durin the day so i dont think anything bad would happen. and i would kick myself in the ass if she turns out to be a hell of a dog and i coulda bread her and made some money off of her. im just curious what everyones opinion on gettin a hunting dog fixed or not is and if any of you who have theirs fixed howd they turn out.

On a female dog, fixing them won't affect their drive for hunting, usually the males are the ones you don't want to neutre, because it could negatively affect their drive, but on females it can be a good thing to spade them, because you won't have to deal with the heat cycle, when they go into that they can go kind of nutty for a little while and can really suffer for control during hunting while in heat. If you are not planning on hunt testing her or championing here out, I would seriously consider spading her, but hey it's your choice. If you're serious about breeding her, you'll just have to deal with the nutty heat cycles! 8) Just like a woman! Good luck, are you going to have her trained? I had a friend who dropped his dog off to get trained, she was doing great but then went into her 1st heat cycle and went nutty, the trainer called him and told him to come get her and take her home. He ended up not taking her back to finish the training.

My lab is not fixed, and has no focus. Course she is the wifes dog, and was never trained in the first place :? I have tried to work with her, and she has great potential, but I can't afford to send her off or a "training collar" (ZAP) :P

We have bred her once already, and her pups are awesome. I know half the people that bought the pups, and they are smarter than mom is.

This isn't about me. This is about you!....lol. It is quite spendy to have a litter, especially since you have the female. If we didn't have to have an emergency c-section, our total bill would have been around $800-$1000, and only made $300. But, the c-section was $1,500.

I would like to have my next female fixed.

what sgtsltr said is what kinda worries me. i work a ton and wouldnt be able to be around as much as probably necessary. and if i wasnt around and somethin went wrong while i was gone it could be bad. i know a few guys who have theres fixed as well as some who dont. im just torn keep the info coming guys. also how long does the heat cycles last for and how often are they?

I have a very calm good dog. One that looks at me like what do you want me to do next. I got her fixed and really wondered about doing it. In fact she is so mellow I brought her into the vet once because she is just so calm. They first said she may have thyridous. That got me searching on the net and one thing the vet will not tell you is that getting a female fixed can lead to thryidious. Ours does not have it but I was so mad because no one told me that spaying a bitch can actually lead to problems.

What made me finally get her fixed is the fact it is my wifes dog and she said if you do not want her fixed you have to clean up an blood from her. She went in the next week. My jobs with the dog are feed while hunting in SD. Take her hunting. My wife feed and picks up the poop :D

So I can not complain but with our dog being so mellow she would have thrown good pups.

They where the question i got told to ask myself....

1 will breeding her help the breed

2 Any quailty that you dont like in your dog

3 How are her eyes elbows and hips

4 Can you be sure that a stray wont get her

5 can you stand not having her for 32 days of season if shes in season because every intact male will find you trust me

6 do you have time to nuture the pups

7 do you have people knocking on your door for a pup

8 do you have any plans to run ht or ft that missing a few because of cycle

If you ans these questions and postive ouy way the negs then dont fix her but i lost one dog when after cycle her uters didnot close and infection got a holder her and whopped up on her

But trust your own judgement do what you feel right for the dog

My dad took his 3 year old english pointer, which he has hardly worked with at all, hunting on a gun club hunt last spring. The owner of the club watched her hunt for a while and wanted to breed one of his males with her. My dad is still thinking it over. If he does it, it will be shortly after our pheasant season ends on January 10th. I think you can make some money if you don't fix her and breed her. Just my 2 cents

I work with a vet and she says if u are not going to breed or have finished u should get them fixed as it solves lots of problems later on in life.Got my spanial speyed when she was older as i wasnt quite quick enough to boot my pig dogs arse so i ended up getting her fixed wish i had done it when she was younger as it kocked her around a lot.Going to do the same to my lab after i get a litter out of her.
