I know this is a waterfowl forum but I could use some advise since it kinda relates to the sport. I'm planning to hunt the early goose season in the morning (w/my dog) and dove in the afternoon.
My question is, do you guys use dogs for dove hunting.

I don't mainly because it's so hot here in ky the first of sept, It's different here in the early goose season they fly early in the morning and late in the afternoon and there is usually some water around..Dove hunting here is mostly done in cut corn or silage and a lot of time earlier in the evening so it's hotter, And most of the time it is a field full of dove hunters shooting like crazy and can confuse a young dog not to mention the feathers come off doves really easy and fill the dogs mouth...But if it's a cool day and you are hunting by yourself or another one or two and you want to take your dog i would say go for it..

Kind of the same deal here. I don't really run the dog on dove hunting, the feathers just fill his mouth up and really turn him off, so don't want any negative things associated with retrieving. I think if you do, you need to be real sensitive to the dog, some dogs may really not mind, others may not like it and it could be a negative. Usually when we dove hunt it is with abunch of guys 5-7 guys and it's pretty fast and furious, so just too much going on for the dog. Try it though and see how the dog reacts. Good luck.

I took my dog out dove hunting last year and she was 10 months old. She loved it. She actually found several birds that we wouldn't have found with out her. But if there is a lot of people shooting it does affect the dog. She wanted to run to whereever a gun went off. I just used it as a good training tool to get her to stay plus she got to do some retrieving before her first waterfowl season.

Good advice. If there's only two or three of us I'll give it a try. Thanks guys.

I've done it as well...even with my German Wirehair....
just keep the dog in the shade and make sure you have plenty of water..other than that...its just another chance to work with your dog....
good luck..
