When y'all were beginning, did any of you learn the basics, and seem like you hit a rut where you weren't learning anything else??I think I have the basics down, but I just cant improve on it it seems like...

I know the rut your talking about , i went threw that in duck calling and Im finaly out of that rut and currently Im stuck in anouther rut but that rut is for competion goose calling The only advise I have for geting out of the rut your stuck in is just keep practicing and go to "calling ducks .com"website and listen to outher people calling and try to memic there calling style and that will dramaticly improve your calling. just my opinion.

Been there, done that....the best advice I can offer is to find some live geese to listen to and try and make those sounds.....for they are the best teachers. And secondly, if you can't find live geese to listen to, watch some hunting videos, go to CDC and see what everyone else is doing. Hope this helps.....anymore questions, please ask....thanks a lot....

Anytime I get away from calling it always takes me a day or two to get back in the saddle. Other times I feel like all of you and want to get a better sound or new note because I am tired of having a human rythm. I find listening to a variety of callers or birds helps me change rythms and sound different.

I would have to agree with the others on here, as far as listening to live birds and try to pick out at least 1 note or sequence and try to mimic it, or listen to other callers or videos and listen to their sequence and try to mimic. It's amazing how you'll be stuck on something and all of a sudden you have a moment when it finally makes sense and you've nailed it, then repeat it and repeat it and it becomes part of the routine, and then you move on to the next note or sequence and work on it routinely until you get it. In other words, lots and lots of practice, and you never know when it will finally hit you. Good luck. Continue that calling even thru the off season, keep those calls handy at all times and blow a little every chance you get. Offseason is the time to learn, when you're hunting, you better just stick with what you got.

Funny you mentioned this. I believe I am in a rut as well. I need to work on my transitions and am trying to learn a few advanced calls like the train and some others. I'm not sure what the other one I am working on is, but I know its tough. Don't get me wrong, I still sound pretty good. :D

It has been frustrating, espicially getting the moan, I think I have tried every variation and just cannot seem to nail it. I am working on changing tones, the high to low, just trying to get the multiple goose sound, I am confident enough that I'll be able to call geese this season, but I want to be even better than that!

Corey, I agree getting better can't hurt. But to me, reading geese is just as important. Example: if birds start to drift, hit them a little harder and keep hitting them until they turn back to you. Also, watch for slowness of wing beat and if the birds are dropping any altitude. If they are doing these things, keep doing what you're doing until they're right in your face. Sorry for the Zink caller advice, but I listened to Clay Hudnall of Zink and GHG do a goose hunting seminar at Sportsman's this weekend. He says to start out calling at about 50-60 % speed. He says that if the birds start to drift or fly away, then you can turn it up a notch with some double clucks and comeback calls. It makes total sense, because if the geese drift and your'e giving them all you got, how are you going to get them back. You would have nothing else to give to them, speed wise.

Don't apologize for using Zink, I understand brand loyalty but geezzzz gettin help is getting help...The only guy close to me is 2 hrs away and he is on Bill Saunders pro-staff, he helps me w/my SMH or my Guide series, you learn differant things from differant hunters/callers. But yeah this will be my second season hunting geese, so I need to learn how to read the geese
