What call would be my best bet for hunting on a river this season and how large of a decoy spread would you recommend? I currently only have the straight suzy and really like it.

Try a Flamed Hedge HPH!! Should be just what you are looking for hunting over water!!

Also another good call wood be a Coles Carnage. I think this call is a awesome All-Purpose call!!

Just my 2cents

Ducks or geese?

Cause you said Suzy, which is a duck call,

and somone suggested a HPH

If you are hunting ducks, I would suggest a SMM, or an Echo Open Water,

i have an open water and it will ring for ever

if you are hunting open water ducks, the smm will soar the distance you need. but if you want one all around call that you never have to put down from the time you start calling till you are clicking your safety, I would go with the dead meat single. Ringing top end with a good crispy duck low end. Never fails in open water.....that why its called the DEAD meat. Try one out, and see if it fits you! I've got one for sale also!

I'm hunting ducks and the river has a big sandbar with alot of vegetation growth in the middle of it. The river itself is about 300 yards wide. So how big of a decoy spread should I plan on having. This will be my first full year of hunting ducks so need as much input as possible. Thanks

If I was you I would go with the Dead Meat Mallard. You can get a good highball off of it but you can still get nice and low off of it. The SUV of duck calls.

The two choices I would look into would be a the DMM in a single reed or the Strait Street in single reed. Each call can get loud when you need and get ducky on the bottom end. Play around with the reed alittle bit to find the sound your looking for.

Wide open water the SMM willdo fine, or a strait street( I know I will hear it on this one) But if you know what your doing this call is for more than just comps.

Hunt an area very similar in Oklahoma. This year we will be using; 4 dozen G&H mallard floaters, 1 dozen GHG full body mallards mostly feeders and 6 full body honkers/ 6 floater honkers. I know you said you're hunting mainly ducks but the geese will add a great look, plus grab the attention of any passing honkers. We will also have a few baby mojo’s and 2 wonder duck tornados. Hope this helps!

As wide as the river is their you might want to put out a larger spread, perhapse on the down stream side of the sand bar give it that rafted up good place for a rest look. I like the idea of some full bodies at the waters edge and definately throw in a few geese.
