hey gang, i currently run a strait meat mallard (single reed) and a strait street. Don't get me wrong they sound super ducky, but when i high ball for a couple of notes, every now and again both calls will lock up on me? Can you tell me what i'm doing wrong ? Or do I need to do something with the calls to fix the problem. Thanks in advance.

How often do you clean the call? If it sticks try running a dollar bill between the reed and the tone board. A lot of times the sticking is do to sugars in your mouth and spit from donuts or coffee gets under the tone board and acts like glue. If this doesn't help you may need to have it retuned.

you might want to clean it if you havent. also is your toneboard smooth. that might be part of the problem. if it is smooth then take a fine finger nail file and file the tone board of your call so that it is ruff again, but dont get to crazy with it. just a couple of passes just to ruffen it up again. thats was i was always told to do. hope this helps a little

Grinder, I have the same problem with my single reed SMM. :x There's several things you can do to fix this problem. First, try to spit as little as you can into the can because the moisture from your mouth is what makes the calls stick. Second, you can take the call apart and blow hard down the insert from the end. This will blow alot of the spit out of the call. I think the best thing you can do is take the call apart and flick the reed away from the tone board. The more you do this, the better. This will eventually make the reed sit slighty up off the tone board, so it is hard for it to stick since the reed isn't even on the tone board. Try these and it will help. The flicking of the reed should will fix the problem. Also, you may be choking down on the call too much. That seems to make them want to stick.

Is the call ringing at the high end? It could be tuned to light for you and you're blowing right through it, otherwise..you're spittin' a lot cause it's HARD to lock up a hail call. Good luck!

Have you ever had the call apart? There is a certain way the reed should go in to help keep the call from sticking. The sheets of material the reeds are cut from are cut from big rolls, therefore the reeds usually have a very very slight bend to them. Look down the reed from the end and you can usually see the bend in it. Place the reed on the tone board so the bend is up away from the tone board. This should help your problem. Hope this makes sense. Any more questions send me a pm.

You can also take the reed out and lay it on a flat surface, this should help you find the natural bend in it.

yeah...I don't think i'd do that. Just make sure the tone board is dry and free of spit and other crap that gets in your call. DRY is the key word!
