Mallard Stomper actually gave me the idea for this thread.

Sandhills. Hunt 'em? Love 'em? Hate 'em?

Thoughts anyone??

Nebraska is a 'safe zone' for the cranes. They have a bottleneck migration through central nebraska, and at anytime during the spring migration there can be over 60,000 roosting on a 5 mile stretch of the platte river. Amazing to see, but devastating to cropland.

Around here, you love them or hate them.

We have the same issue here. We get 1000's of them here & cant do anything about it. They actually closed off a refuge that we used to hunt because of them.

So for me, I hate'em!.......................But i hear they are tasty!

no, they are the "protecters" of all cranes. im working like a mile away from it right now. eitherway they dont support crane hunting of anyform, whooping or sandhill

Why would you hate these birds. They are majestic and their sound is unmistakable. I love the rolling sound they have. You can hear them from a mile up and it sounds like they are right on top of you. Calling them is next to impossible and they have amazing eye sight. I cant see a reason to hate them. We hunt them here in Kansas and we are very lucky to do so. I have had the fortune of being on some successful hunts and I cant tell you how honored I was to be a part of it. Hate is a strong word and I hope that it was meant in jest. These birds should be respected as deeply as any other bird we hunt.

Oh...and as far as Ribeye goes....They truly are the "Ribeye of the Sky"

I have cared for them for years, they used to come in the state early and start to push the canadas out early and then hunting season was screwed. And to make it even better we have people that live here that see them ever year will slam on there brakes on the middle of the damn highway just to watch them and there has been some pretty bad accident b/c of them.

I'm going to S.D. this year and I believe you can shoot them there. I hope to have the chance to, I'd like to try one if their as good as you say. Do you actually go after them, or are they just a bonus when your hunting ducks and stuff?
