Watching Falling Skies 4 it looks to me like Foiles uses 3 1/2" - 3 shot for both ducks and geese. I don't think they ever showed a box of anything else. Does anyone know if that is what he shoots most of the time, or is it just a coincidence that the camera didn't show anything else? I've always shot 3 1/2" BB for geese and used 3" shells for ducks. Do a lot of people shoot ducks with 3 1/2s or is that overkill? It sure would be nice to buy one load for for both. Sometimes I wonder if I would knock down more geese if I switched to 2 or 3 shot.

I asked this question beginning of summer and I believe a prostaffer said jeff shoots 3.5 #3s at ducks and 3.5 BBBs at geese.

Not sure if Jeff ever mixes it up or not. As far as your next question, I usually hunt mixed bag hunts Ducks and Geese, and I generally load up with 3.5" shells and shoot ducks with them too. It really doesnt tear them up that bad, and I believe their is no such thing as overkill. I'd much rather overkill then cripple, and besides dead is dead. No such thing as too dead.

No such thing as too dead.
That first duck on FS5 might be classified as overkill.....when jeff says "you might not want to pick that up"...then the thing is pretty well in pieces.

Ya that first duck didn't look to good a little to close. But it happens!

I would have to agree, but I have seen worse....but as someone mentioned, dead is dead no matter howmuch shell you use. But I agree, I would rather have to much then not enough. Last year fall turkey hunting my cousin and I only had pheasant loads, 2 3/4", lets just say I wish I had 3 or 3.5 roman candles haha. He dropped his bird at 20 yards no problem, but when we called them back, they only came in to 50 yards and it took a little more then 1 shot to get my bird down.....so like they say, bigger is better 8)

I patterned my gun (SBE2 w/ PM Ext.) and Win. Supreme 3 1/2" - 1 1/2oz. BB put 50 pellets in a 30" circle at 50 yds. Win. Supreme 3 1/2" - 1 1/2oz. #2 put 74 pellets in a 30" circle at 50 yds. They are both moving at 1475fps. I think I might switch to the #2s for geese, since they fill the circle quite a bit better. Will they still have enough sack to cleanly kill geese or am I better off with the bigger shot but less in the kill zone?

We smoke ducks and geese with 3 inch number 2 shot, all day long down in the southern portion of the flyway. That's plenty of a shell, but the 3.5 will give you a little bit extra range. It just might take you longer to get on target from the recoil after your first shot.

Kent 3.5" #2 1625fps for everything.
I have 3" shells, but don't use them much.

how exactly does a 3.5 inch shell give you extra range?

Yeah I plan on shooting 3" #2's for both ducks and geese. Last year thats what seemed to work the best. When it gets to late season honkers I would probably switch over to 3.5" BB or BBB

I shoot 3" #3's for ducks & i'll throw in some 3 1/2" for geese every now and then. I shoot more ducks than geese though. So for me its an easy call.
