View Full Version : Painting a Choke

Just got a patternmaster in the mail for my new Extrema 2. After shooting black cloud all last year and hearing the ridiculous reports of the patterns that the combo throws, I got the blackcloud patternmaster, but it's silver. We spend time fussing about mudding and stubbling our blinds, weighing the pros/cons of FFDs vs. Pro-grades, etc... So should I worry about the little silver tip of a choke tube sticking out of my blind? I know this will probably get the same type of response as the silver bands on calls, but calls are usually hidden by a blind. If people tend to stray from silver chokes, is there an easy way and good procedure to paint it black. Any tips/precautions? Thanks

I bought a paint stick (pen) in matte black ... the kind that you would touch up your gun with, and that works great . I only touch it up about once a season.

I painted mine. Here's what I did.....
240 grit sand paper to the choke, I only went about 1/2" past where it meets with the barrel
I went with semi-gloss black...three coats of rustoleum. Yes, semi-gloss. It ended up matching the barrel. But, that's what I had handy.
Let it sit over night. I finally have to touch it up after two seasons and lots of trap.
Hope this helps

I have had a pattern master sticking out the bottom of my blind for four years and I have never once seen a bird flare from that. Of course i cant say that it wasnt what flared them, but honestly. Spend all of your time worrying about the small stuff and you will be bound to miss the big picture. I would spend time fixing paint on a decoys back before i ever worried about my choke tube color. I'm not bashing and I'm not saying that it is wrong to color or paint it, I just dont think its worth the time of day. Of course when i was sitting in class in college or on the practice fields during those long afternoons of football i did some crazy things to pass the time. If you are just trying to kill time until season opener gets here i say go for it.

Hit these guys up. They'll do it for $15 & it's good stuff. I've got a couple calls out to them right now.

Depending on what you want to do, look up Lauer Custom Weaponry at www.lauerweaponry.com and look up DuraCoat. You can buy a kit and "paint" the tube, or you can also refinish your firearm. I did a Remington 870 and a barrel for a Benelli M4 with 4 tablespoons of finish and 1/2 teaspoon of hardener. If you have access to an air compressor and a HVLP (high volume, low pressure) airgun, you can do it yourself. And that 4 tablespoons of finish put two coats on the Remington and Benelli.
DuraCoat does NOT wear off. The SOCOM finish is preferred.

I painted mine...
240 grit sandpaper....rough it up really good...
Tape off the part that goes inside the barrel...
Spray it with Krylon camo paint or something similar, use a FLAT paint.
I have a max4 gun, so I used brown and it was an exact match, I gave it two coats.

If the birds are that close to see the choke they should be adout dead. I would worry more about decoy placement and concealment.

Not always true. On a bright day that can reflect and be seen from a long way off.

I ended up going with Krylon camo brown. It looks really good and obviously has zero glare.
