I know in the early season you don't want to put out a whole lot of decoys, when you are on the X , but what if you are running traffic . The field I'm going to be hunting is not to far from the roost pond. Their will be a lot of guys hunting down by the water. so I'm going up the road my 1/4 of a mile or so. Their are a lot of birds in the area, so I don't know if I need to put out a lot more decoys than I might if I where on the X. Also I have 4 guys hunting and one filming, so I might have to put out more just to hide everyone. How big or small do you guys think my spread should be. I have 24 FB , 24 shells , 36 silos. Take all of that or not . That is my ????

If it was me I wouldnt take all those decoys Early season birds are family birds they arent used to seeing alot of birds in the field that werent there the other day. They will probably know something is up and wont come into shooting range. If it was me I would take all your fullbodys and maybe 6 or 8 of your shells and actually that might be to many dekes also. You might just have to play it play by play and see what the birds want to see. Thats my 2 cents

2-21/2 decoys should be enough. Put them in 3-4 family groups and you should be fine. But if you are seeing 100 birds or so at a time in the same field, you can go with more.

When running traffic, i would use all you got, especially with all the competition you will have. sounds like some birds will see 3-4 spreads before they get to you, if you use all you have and really spread it out, you will have good chance to kill some birds.

I have to agree on 2- 2.5 doz. dekes to start out with. Like it was stated earlier, geese right now are in family groups and you should not need more than 2.5 doz. What we do for the early season is put out 2 doz. big foots in family groups and use 6 big shells either on top of us or beside us for concealment. Works just fine.

NJ, we don't have a early season for honks, but we were gonna go pound dove today, but it rained from 6am till 2 this afternoon, so blew it off, especially since i was going to hunt water. we have been getting lots of rain so things are really starting to look good for our waterfowl season. should be lots of ducks, and tons of geese and cranes. already countin' the days till ya'll get here.
