First of all i'm not 100 percent sure what we are going to do. But i just wanted to hear everyone else's opinoin.. This question is open to anyone with an opinion and i will post back in a few days how it went.. We got to spot no 1 opening morning sat, we kill 12 geese a 6 man limit for ky 2 each, probaly see 200 geese, go back sunday morning no geese saw 3 little bunches at least 400 yards or farther away, Time for spot no 2 Here's the question and the scenario. We got about a 3 acre waterhole it's flat all the way around , surrounded by a pasture field , with grass and clover about 2 to 3 inches high in it.The geese are feeding in the pasture about a 200 yards away from the water, when i get there this afternoon just before dark scouting it. This is flat open country, no banks or anything around the water, just pretty much level with the grass growing up the waters edge remember grass is only 2or 3 inches high every where. Ok i know the geese do land on the water at times , but it's right before dark, and they are feeding 200 yards away . Wind direction dosen't really matter with the exception of the geese will be coming from the sound end of the pond, roost is about 2 miles away to the south, there is probaly a 150 or so geese in the field. They will more than likely fly over the water to get to the spot they were feeding tonight. Question is, Do i set up on the water , or do i set up in the field, We will be in Final Approach S.U.B blinds and Pro Eliminators Hiding is the same since the grass goes all the way to the water anyway.. I know a lot of times where geese are feeding at dark and roosting somewhere else, they will come back and land close to the spot they feeding at the night before.. What do i do and why I will leave this here a couple days and then reply back with what we did and how it turned out.......

If it were me I think I would put some floaters in the pond and some other decoys what ever you are using in the field around your blinds . That way you have a spread on the water and in the field , so if they want to land in the pond you will still have a shot , or if they land in the field your good to go that way as well. From my experiences from what I've seen and heard geese like to land in the water and then walk in to the field or grass to feed . So if you can imitate that it might work out for you . Just my two sense.

My vote would be to just land the geese in the field, sometimes with water they will land short out of gun range, so I think it is easier to direct them and land them on the ground than the water. Just take the water out of play. Good luck and let us know. If you need help killing those things just let me know!

I agree with HH. If the water was smaller and the geese were closer to the water, then I would set up some floaters and field decoys. But not on a 3 acre pond when they are feeding 200 yards away. We have a similar situation. We have an acre pond that is holding about 100 geese. The owner mows about 40 yards all the way around the edge of the pond and then it is surrounded by standing corn on 3 sides. And the pond is less than a mile away from a decent sized lake where the birds are roosting. The geese are feeding right on the bank. We're gonna throw out a dozen floaters and 1-2 dozen full bodies. We aren't gonna be able to hit the spot until next weekend though so hopefully they are still there.

If it were me, I would be in the field for sure. My experienc is that geese have been on the water all night long and they need to feed right away in the morning. I dont think you can go wrong with settin up in the field.

Ok we set up this morning and had a good shoot, 5 people all limited out 2 each, the limit in ky, total 10 birds I will leave how we set up a little while longer before i reply . I'm curious to how different people would have hunted this situation. To tell you the truth i thought long and hard on it before coming to a conclusion, But i will reply back how we set up.If i knew how i would post a pic ... lol

Sorry about the previous post i was playing with pictures, in photobucket I'm fifnishing this post we set up with 6 decoys in the water about 85 full bodies behind us in the grass, the geese came from the south just as planned, not much wind, but we did have a little bit of a north wind.i was banking that the geese were landing in the water and then walking out and feeding, i can't say for sure what they were doing but the set up is working and we are killing them thanks to the guys that replied , i was wondering what everybody's opinion was on the deal...
