theres been many debates over which is more important to carry into a field; a call or a flag ... many guys agree that a flag is just as or even more important! it gets the attention and gives them a "pinpoint" of where you are! flagging should be done when the birds are in the distance when you can first see them. I dont flag once the birds have located the spread and are within 100 - 150 yards ... a quick flutter of the flag every once in a while just to get some movement is sometimes needed once they are within that 150 yard range though. you dont want to over do it when they are close because it gives them the chance to see the flag better and realize its not a real goose!

I agree with that statement until they start working and turn on you then I flip it a little bit to create motion. But when they're facing me I agree with the 100-150 yd statement. We have pulled them in when they are what seems to be a mile away standing up in the decoys, walking and flagging. It will definately pull the birds to give you a look.

I like to flag when the geese are turning corners. If they are headed right for you, leave it on the ground.

I do all my flagging either when the geese are way off in the distance or when they are circling the spread quartering. If they are heading straight in no flagging is necessary and might be detrimental.

I think flagging is very important. My friends and I were out hunting in a corn field, we had 4 dozen decoys out and a FLAG. The geese had not really been landing in one specific place just kind of spread out between 3 corn fields. There was another group of hunters just to the field next to use and they had about 2-3 dozen out but no flag. Let’s just say for us it was a quick morning, we limited out in about an hour. The guys that didn't have a flag and were in the field next to use never fired a shot.

I agree flagging is a very good way to get the attention of geese even if they are way off in the distance and can't hear your call the flagging i have found out will bring them into the spread

Flagging is just as important as calling. Reading the geese some days when theres lots of pressure sometimes we won't even blow the calls and just flag when there turning and off in the distance. Still end up with great success.
