I have been hearing a lot of talk about broke in guts. Is it easier to make some of the notes with broke in guts or can you achieve th same thing with more shaving of the reed.

You can still make most of the notes with a new set of guts, They are just not as goosey sounding for the most part as a worn in set of guts, I don't do the train as well on a new set ,as i do on my worn guts but to answer your question , you can still make most of the notes..One thing about a goose call the more you use it , the better it becomes, you are breaking in your guts and also the more you pratice with it the more your ability to make the notes gets better, Shaving the reed for the most part makes the reed thinner , thus makes it easier to break or not take as much air so to speak, but a lot of that is in the tuning of the call, Be careful if you shave on your reed, if you get it to thin it will lose it's pop making the call sound to flat, hope this helps
