I've heard of guys actually shaving or filing the wedge and the insert. What would this achieve if anything.Sounds like a good way to have a loose set of guts. Let me know. thanks in advance.

I haven't heard of that. I suppose some guys do it, cause the guts may be too big for the call. Maybe to roughen up the sound of the call. I guess I'm not sure why it would be done. I know that some guys are able to achieve making the guts like they are worn in, buy shaving out the area that the reed is slapping the tone board.

I'm sure I didn't help out much....worth a try.

I do it on most sets of my guts, it changes the sound of the call .. I guess it sounds crazy but it does work, How tight or how loose the guts are sitting in the call changes the sound and pitch of the call.

I've not shaved my wedge or tone board, but my guts are really broke in and are starting to get "loose in the call" and it does sound more raspy and more mellow, more goosey. By not being so tight in the insert it doesn't put as much pressure on the reed, so not as tight a pop, and there fore more mellow of a call.

some people also sand the toneboard on their duck calls very lightly to help prevent them from sticking.
