I've been blowing the smh for four or five years. In Jeff's tapes he says to blow strait air through the call; today I let a guy in the club blow my new showtime and he sounded like three or four different birds in one breath of air.I don't sound near as good as this guy, kill birds though. Ihave a good grasp of clucks, moans, double clucks, etc. Iwas just wondering if grunting into the call would help, or maybe some other type of "words" to say through the call could help me improve. This fella wouldn't come off any info... he is a sean mann junky. thanks for any help.

Blowing Straight air, keeping your tounge down, and not using alot of back pressure are all keys to sounding like a BUNCH of geese. Get the Calling Geese 2.0 DVD, it is the BEST learning tool for the $$$, actualy seeing how to hold and blow the call is a big help. Keeping in mind the the SMH was designed for little to no back pressure. It may come down to forgetting everthing that you have learned and reteaching youself to call. I had to do this because when I started on a Short reed you said words into the call (to wit for a greeting call for example) and when I got my SMH everything changed. However with the SMH if you leave your tounge down and allow air to flow over your tounge to make the notes it allows you to call alot FASTER.
As for grunting into the call the only time I grunt is for a Feeding Growl and even then it is more of a growl into the call than a grunt.
Hope this helps, the DVD would help alot more though. It is much easier to show someone then tell them.

deffinately check out callin 2.0. picked it up this weekend at the gateway outffiters contest and it was well worth it. but i also agree with reaper record yourself man you might be surprised. also have people listen to ya and give u feed back. mark spence was a huge help to me on gettin the basics down of the short reed when i first started. i still suck in some aspects ie the moan but clucks feedin growl hail call and gretting call i can do pretty well. i can half ass double cluck now also.

You can use a bit of voice inflection here and there to get different variations in tone....For the most part, I use no voice inflection, with the exception being certain moans and murmurs. My different clucks are all made using more or less air presented into the call and altering my hand position to accomodate the air...more air = hands more open.
Sounding like different geese can be accomplished in many different ways...voice inflection, change in amount of air presented into the call, change in hand position, or any combination of the above. You need to decide what works best for you and work on it.
If you want some help over the phone, shoot me a PM and I will get you my number and hopefully we can work something out for ya!!!
