I hear all the time about keeping your tounge down when using the short reed call. My question is this. I have been practicing on my first short reed, the SMH . I understand how to do it and am not too shabby at the basics, but when I use the back of my tounge I can get quicker. To understand what I am saying...put the tip of the tounge behind your teeth and then say "cack". You will notice the back of the tounge goes up. Now is this what they mean by using your throat or is this using your tounge still?? Please shine some light on this for me. It sound ok to me, like I said, it is fast, but it is sharp, not really murrmerd together like Jeff does it on his DVD. Tell me your thoughts, I know everyone is different but I want to know if this is called either "using the throat" or am I still "using my tounge". Thanks for your time.

Keep your tounge anchored behind your teeth. The "bridge" of your tounge will come up when you call, the notes are produced by allowing the are to flow over your tounge changing the volume of air flowing through the call. Fliping you tounge doesnt allow you to produce as fast of a sequence of clucks and what have ya. In Jeffs DVD Jeff refers to it as a garden hose by limiting the ammount of air you put through the call. Hope this helps.

When I'm calling i notice that the back of tounge is doing all the work. I can still produce good sounds with using my throat, but I personally am faster and more fluent with the back of my tounge. I have been getting better at using just my throat. It takes quite a bit of dissipline to use your throat IMO. Both ways are good. If it sounds good to you and it is working in the field. Keep at it. everyone calls different. If it's working, don't change it!
