well your on the right site! I've tried countless calls in the past and found that foiles calls are the best. There easy to use and they also have some dvd and cds that will help you along the way! I like the timber rattler and the dead meat mallard personally! If ya have a outdoor shop near ya go try some out thats the only way you'll know which ones work for you!

I would feal confident in saying, you could get you a TR in double or single reed (which ever you perfer) and put it on them every single time...

check out the foiles line up . you can get a tr for soft to medium work, that will still have a nice top end but wont' scream as loud as your dead meat. Also try the strait timber and the bgb calls too. The death whistle is nasty on the bottom and midranged work included too. The most important thing is to pick a call you have confidence in cause right off the bat, you won't pick it up in the woods if you are not convinced that you can land ducks with it. Don't be affraid to try new things or ask for help from staffers. More than likely one or all of them have been in the same shoes before and would love to show you the path they took to help. if you need anything pm me and ill help you out bud.

Go on youtube, between me, Trevor, and the others that have videos on there, you can hear a lot of the calls out.

That teamed up with the companies website sound clips, should give you everything you need to hear.

Calls I would recommend- Zink xr2 is #1 for it's pure realistic sound. BGB death whistle and smokin doubles are great, I just recently decided to set up my old echo timber in cocobola with a double reed configuration. It is now a pure nasty low-med. volume call, absolutely sick.

RNT makes great calls, from the new old style, to the short barrel, to the MVP, you can't go wrong.

So many calls, a lot of them are great, check out company websites for sound files, youtube, callingducks.com, see what tickles your fancy and then give the company a call and chat a little.

You'll find that you run into a lot of great guys, and a lot of helpful advice.

You stated you're into softer calls. That said, test drive (in the order of soft to louder, but still soft) the Strait Timber, the Timber Rattler (double reed) and the Dead Meat Mallard (double reed). Personally, I think the TR (in double) is the dirty talkin' porn star of all duck calls.
