This probably won't happen until next year but I've been looking at boats and motors. The canoe will have to work for another season.
I'm torn between the Go-Devil surface-drive and the Mud Buddy hyper-drive; both being in the 25-27 horse power range. The boat will be a 16'x54" Tracker Grizzly. So far, I'm leaning towards the Go-Devil.
Any opinions?

Me and my buddies just got a muddy buddy 25 horse. And that is an awesome piece of equipment. We just got it last weekend which happend to be are last weekend of early teal. We took it out and tried it and first we went through about a 1/4 inch of water then we took it through just strait mud with no water and it just pushed right through with no problem. And personally i feel that the muddy buddy does alot better in open water than a Go-Devil Surface Drive. That just my opinion hope it helped.
just some info go devil surface drives have no clutch so you have to start them with the prop out of the water and manual trim ,also they have a bronze bushing instead of a bearing so you have to keep the lower unit greased . now mud buddy has some problems with wires breaking for the elect clutch, this is not a major problem but i would put some wire loom around were the the wires go in and out of the metal areas, know this for a fact because i know people in my area have had these problems and broke down ,both have pro's and con's. also i have a 1648 grizzly and talked to both companys and they say our boats are (junk boats) B.S. my grizzly dealer is a mud buddy dealer and the boats perform well with these motors. myself am still considering a long tail nothing to break down but i dont want lose that much speed so im waiting to see what mud buddy has instore on the new design longtail props want to stay around 25 mph. running 29.7mph with my 25hp suzuki hope this helps
