Brock,
Hey i actually have both the TR and a smoke'n'double... I find that in the field day in day out, that the Smoke'n'Double sticks less than either of my TR calls... Also keep this in mind, and have heard it from a few people along the way "ALL CALLS STICK"...

Yet to stick my spit-techs. I am a classic over spitter too.

I had a DMM that stuck a lot. I took and sanded the tone board lightly with 320 grit sand paper and made sure that the reed was down when I was blowing it. IF YOU SAND IT, ONLY SCRATCH IT. Too much and the call will sound bad all the time.

Meaning....

When you are looking into the barrel of the call, the tone board is on top and the reed is on the bottom.

Does this really make a difference?

In a way it helps the spit "fall" out from in between the reed and the tone board.

Yes sir ittle help. :D

BGB runs a hell of a soft double reed call, the death whistle and the smokin double, for versatility, control, and sound they are number 1 or 2 in my book.

I have been runnin a smokin double acrylic end piece in a duck whistle barrel. It sticks a little when it is cold but I just shake it or blow it out. This is a very sweet combo nice mellow timber call. Later BUBBA DUCK

when you scuff your tone board you want to run the opposite way of the reed, correct?

like if you were blowing the call, you would go from right to left on the t board rather than towards and away from you? or is it the opposite way

It is true all calls stick. I cannot be honest if I told you I havent stuck a spit tech. Yes the spit grooves help, but just get what you like because ALL CALLS STICK!
Before someone asks me why I didnt send my spit techs back. They dont stick enough for all that trouble.
Have a good day gents!

Get some Rain-X and coat your reads. I do this when I clean my calls, and it does seem to help. Before I started doing this, my calls would stick, especially the double reeds. They get wet between the reeds, and they won't move. Of course, when they did move, I'd get a really weird sound that was nothing like a duck. The Rain-X tends to keep water off the reeds, and seems to make a big difference. My tone boards are roughed up too, but my calls would still stick until I tried the this.

If someone could take a picture of said spit grooves that would be greatly appreciated.

Gardner calls DO NOT stick. I don't care how much you spit or how many times you drop it in the water.

I have talked to Buck several times about people saying they have stuck his calls. "I have yet to have someone send me their call saying it's sticking. The one person that I know of that swore up and down his Gardner call stuck, I had approached him via PM on a site and after 3 years, am still yet to see that call in my mail box to be refunded" Those are words right out of Buck's mouth.

To the person with the tone board scuffing question.....NO DO NOT SCUFF CROSSWISE.......Sand length wise.

To answer the original question.. yes the spit grooves in the BGB calls do help with sticking. Cleaning of your call, no matter what brand you run will keep this to a minimum as well. I've found that most guys bringing in calls to be tuned, " because they stick" actually had a ton of gunk and debris either coating the reed or toneboard surface.

Hope that helps.
