I have a 6 year old golden lab, she like to kill me this morning. Everyone knows hunting on the ice can be dangerous! Well ive got a spot 100 yards from a local fairground pond, that is great for neck bands and lots of bands. The spot is a 5 acre pond with a island the the middle. Up until 2 days ago there was open water around the island, but due to the recent temps. it has froze :( This morning i set up 3 dozen big feet on the ice, man what a a** kicker! my final goose came in and it had a green neck band. i shot him and he coasted out to the island, the dog went out after it, only to a big suprise! she fell through the ice and couldnt get out. Now i dont know about yal, but that dog is everything to me, we have had lots of great memories in the field that i will never forget! So here i am tring to save my dog in 5 degree weather, in the water before she tires herself out. I ended up running out there striping down and jumping in, i luckly got her out on the ice, but then had to worry about myself. Keep in mind i was by myself, and at that point, i was willing to die for my dog, as she was willing to do for me. i barley had enough strength tpo pull myself out then put the overalls back on. it was a real scare, its almost like that dam goose knew we would go in the water if we went out there!! Anything they can do i guess to try to get back at us for killing there brothrens! Heres the kicker, the goose managed to get under the ice in all the comoshine. so no neck collar for me till i can find his dumb A** when the thaw comes. What would yal have done?

it boils down to is a animal worth a human life??? NO--------BUT when it comes to your huntin buddy---the one you can count on to go when no one else will, who would go out to you if you fell thru, and who would give his life for you without hesitating-----well Yeah! Theres something about the bond between a hunter and his dog. Is it a smart choice? probably not, but one i think most of us would do, or at least freeze our ass of tryin!

In all honesty, if it were my dog it would have drown. Sorry but I am not going to risk my kids growing up without a Dad to save my dogs life. Just reality.

alot of people dont realize that there is a time and a place for a dog when you are hunting. sometimes it is better to leave them at home. and yes i have owned a dog or two.

i would have went in if i had someone to make sure i got out. if i was by my self i would have to let the dog go. it is reasons like this that it isnt safe to hunt by yourself sometimes.(not saying i dont hunt by my self im just saying)

Great Post Hammer. Very informative, and realistic. I love my labs greatly, and I find it humorous that someone would think just because you wouldnt go in after a dog, you somehow do not own a dog!!!! That being said my labs would drown too. My life is not worth saving a dogs and ice is a very real threat. Also, it is a very rare occasion that I take my dogs and put them in that kind of a life threatening situation. I have the mind set, if I wouldnt go in, Im not sending my dog in. Ive seen one too many times where even dogs that could make it out but have been exposed to the ice cold water for too long, go into hypothermia. Not even a gold plated neck band would be worth it.

I would go after my dog. I couldnt live with myself knowing i may have been able to save my hunting buddy and didnt.

I would go to the ends of the earth for my lil buddy just like he does for me.

I really did not want to point out the obvious. I was going to be by ice one time this year and I brought my waders with me in case I needed to go in. The pond is shallow enough to get anywhere. I leave my dog home often even when field hunting if it is really cold out.

I'm just not as big hearted as I used to be I guess. I love my dogs but there is a line you gotta draw. Had a dog for about 10 years, she was amazing. One day she nipped at my boy when he was about 2 years old, she lived about 10 minutes after that. I dont put up with **** from dogs and I aint gonna drown for one.

What’s funny is when people see my dog they think I beat it. I give it whack and boot every now and then, like once a year. But for the most part I just keep it inline and it just always looks at me like what you want me to do. I like that. I can not understand anyone who has a dog and can not take it for walk without a lease. About 95% percent of these dog lovers can not even let the dog off the lease in our park and call it back. Bad owners in my mind. The dog is there for us to use as a tool and companion, a one-way street in my book. I am the pack leader and it better know its place.

As far as nipping at your kid or any kid/person I applaud you for doing what any responsible person should do with the dog. At that point it is a negative and needs to be dealt with. Why do owners let thier dogs get aggressive. It all starts with that dam game tug of war. The worst thing you can ever do with a dog is play tug of war cuz every time the dog thinks it wins it thinks it is once step closer to being equal to the person on the other end of the toy.

Happy Holiday!

There are a lot of decisions to be made in life and dogs ARE man's best freind. I hunted that same day and my dog went on the ice also. It's an eary feeling. We were hunting a very shallow slough but you still cringe every time your dog go's out on the ice. I'm just glad it doesn't happen often and I deffinetly don't recomend it. I don't think you would forgive yourself very easy.

I would let a human die before my dog.Ther are no questions asked my dog comes first any day afield. but if it gets sick and is gonna cost money hate to say it but dog gone. Jst like I tell all the pheasant hunters if they shoot my dog there gonna know how it feels. Theyll be gettin lead #6 right up there ass.

I had a dog fall threw ice be fore but if I think the ice is thin I will put some bailing string on the dogs collar and if it falls threw you can jst pull him out. My dog now wont even go on ice after he fell threw, even if he can break it. all it took was once he says no way. He'll even start barking at me if theres a duck on the ice tellin me get my ass out there

I love my dogs too!!! but not at the exspense of a human life! Granted i would do everything possible for my dog----to save his life and keep them safe------but there is a line, and letting someone die isnt one of them! Take percautions and alot of accidents (not all) can be prevented.

what i was thinking was if a human and a dog fell in the water I would save the dog first a human has the mentality to save himself or at least he could stay alive for a longer period of time. sorry if I offended anyone.

as for the guy that said I should be lurking. This is the internet where you can speak whatever is on your mind. If you dont like it stick to magazines
