This is Scout. He's 93 lbs., 3 years old and this is his 2nd waterfowl season.

Our (Scout & I) passion is now waterfowl but I discovered two years ago, during a pheasant hunt, that he's a pointing Lab.

MARSHBLASTER what kinda boat is that ,triton ,excel, lowe? PS must also drive a ford from the pics

MarshBlaster
10-31-2006, 07:48 PM
The boat is an older Xpress and I am a proud Chevy owner. That is my wifes company truck in the picture. That is the only way a Ford would be allowed in this driveway.
I do better than the saddle, I just hook him to the boat trailer to save gas money. If you want to swap dog food bills I'll consider it!

What Does Everyone think is better, To Train Your dog Yourself, or Pay to Have Him/Her Profesionaly Trained ? Just Curious, first time dog trainer, mine alright but shes getting ready to turn 1 year on the 28th of this month, shes a little green but shes got the idea, my only problem is this, i took her to one of the ponds like two weeks ago, its behind a Dunkin Doughnuts and there was maybe 200 geese in and around the pond area, and my dog ran around everywhere, sniffing everything but payed no attention what so ever to the Geese, now i havent introduced her to, dead birds yet, frozen or other wise, but i was just wondering is this a bad thing that she didnt take straight off for the geese, or a good thing that she didnt run straight at them.....

HRK

not really shes just checkin things out pick up the video gun dog cant think of the author, its expensive to have her profesionally trained pm me with yer # and ill call ya

11-14-2006, 06:05 PM
DropEm Another good idea to try is the book Water Dog by Richard Wolters. It's old school, but it works very well. I followed the systems, and no B.S., it works.

BTW hunters ridge, I think, but not sure, Wolters wrote Gun Dog as well, correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey dropem, Im from DE too. I had my boy sent to a pro nearby...close to the eastern shore area. I would say for your first dog, if you have the money, send the dog to a pro. I had to really scrach up the money, but in the end it was the best decision I could have made.
If you want to do it yourself, don't over look Mike Lardy's books and videos. he has a GREAT training program. Good luck with her. and good luck next week  Bring on monday!!!!!

duckmanIII
11-15-2006, 01:36 PM
I found the books easier to use than videos, for me anyhow. I used Water Dog, 10 minute retriever and a couple more. Most of them are similar but little tips can be had from them all. Fun to train your own if you have the places to do it. Most of my old places now have houses on them.

Speaking of training my one year old actually picksup! I wrap the lead up and drop the decoy then simply say pile and he brings the decoy to the bank in a pile.. http://www.huntingsnows.com/album/users/wabo/BigDog_003.jpg

ActionPoint

He'll start waterfowl season in the upper 70's and trim down to mid 60's when the pheasant preserve closes in March. The 3 months of straight upland work really hurts his muscle mass. But with his shoulder height, the lower weight makes for a better gait for upland hunting.

HOLY COW is right!!! that pups HUGE!!! how old was he in that pic?

MarshBlaster
12-03-2006, 10:19 AM
Duckman4Ever, he now tips the scales at 130+/- depending on time of year. He'll get down to 125 in duck season and work up to 130 in the off season.

Hunters ridge, he was 8 weeks old in that pic. That was the day I brought him home.

but they are all new to me, and just think the day before opening day, i didnt have one decoy, and i still have another 6 Hunters Seires feeders in the mail as soon as macks takes them off Backorder...

Hoss you might look at getting a started dog. Not only is it easier to work with them at that point but if you do the math it is often times much less expensive.

Yeah i got a one year old youve probably seen her back a couple pages......got her out a few times this year, but i dont take her when i hunt with my usual crew cause theres just no room in the pit....but when i go out alone, which was only a handfull of times, but she was a total Angel....to my amazement...would just sit on the steps of the pit and stick her head out the grass to watch and see whats going on...unfortunetly to this slow year most of the times i went out there just wasnt very many birds, and i didnt have the biggest of decoy spreads at the time....but needless to say she spent most of this season in the house....which has gotten her up to 77lbs on her small frame....but shes in no way fat lol...as soon as the weather breaks im gonna run her ragged and swim her till her leggs fall off, and knock her back into shape, and really start pounding the puppy out and the hunting dog in.....

roonie76
02-05-2007, 01:08 PM
Yeah, Cody's about 80 lbs now but not getting fat at all. Just got him neutered so I hope that doesn't change anything. I'm taking him to Canada this October so I hope I can work the heck out of him this spring and summer and get the puppy out of him. He's been great in the fields but I wouldn't take him in a boat yet. He hasn't had any formal training other than obedience which was the best $100 I could have spent. The retrieving is in the blood but the obedience isn't and is well worth the professional training. :D

DropEmInDE
02-05-2007, 05:10 PM
LoL i think i spent that 100$ on a call lol whoops....the obedience side of it, i basically did myself...shes very smart and she listens very well....especially when she knows i have the little button. lol...an E-collar makes all the difference in the world....broke all of her bad habits the first week...since shes been cooped up in the house we have been working on some of the from mouth to hand drills, just playing around and keeping it fun.....but once the warm weather hits.....the fun stops and the work starts....!!!!

All of these pics are getting me excited about training. I think I will brave the sub-zero temps to do a little training(hopefully I can make 10 mins). Since i cant figure out how to post pics

i wouldnt do it.....wait a few more weeks till its at least around 30-35........training in the cold sucks, especially if you dont have to. plus you got time.

get the video also by Richard Wolters that helps a ton. better than the book actually, he shows you how to do things correctly and its a good fall back tool also.
