what has been said about woodies soo far is the way it is....they just don't decoy well...they are basically pass shooting birds...if you use some wood duck decoys and when you see them try a wood duck call...that seems to help sometimes and they will occasionally drop into the decoys then but that's not the norm....they're a cool little duck though...I was lucky enough to shoot 2 banded ones on Saturday with my buddy in PA...we also both smacked a banded hen mallard...it was a GOOD DAY![/img]

We shoot lots of woodies here in the early season. You are right that they often only offer pass shooting opportunities but if you find a feeding area like you try to do with geese they will decoy very nicely. They are also my favorite duck on the table and those drakes sure are pretty!

That is definitely true, if you hunt there feeding spot they will decoy just as good or better than mallard. My buddy and me were hunting in a cornfield were they were feeding and I had some that wanted to lank right on me. We would also use some woodie calls and decoys and they locked right up it was pretty sweet. :D

I am very close to a lake with a major refuge on it that is a site where they band woodies, therefore, my dad has a lot of woodie bands. He tells me it's happened before where they've gotten consecutive numbers on the bands.

I hunt in Southwest Va, we kill almost all woodies in the early season the only other ducks we see are black's but you can't kill them here until later...We hunt all river property and where we hunt they either drop in from about 100 yards up to the water in about 4 seconds...or they pass in front...swing around and dump down right into the decoys.... When I split the decoys up in two pods of about 6-10 decoys one group mallards and one group woodies they usually land with the woodie decoys...seem to shy away from the bigger ducks.
