hey boys we were out in the field the other day and it was below freezing, and we had two strait meat honker calls out and runnen and both reeds in both calls cracked. is that because it was cold or what? just wonderen. i guess its just our luck. luckely we had a grinder, and we just switched the guts, and we had a meatcutter also.

Wow, never had a problem even in the coldest weather. Same batch of reeds? How old?
I ALWAYS have a spare set or 100 of reeds and guts in the bag. Usually not for me but I love sticking green guts in other guys calls so they can hear the difference.

My reed had just got back from the shop in october and it did the same thing this time as it did back in october. It starts off as a small crack on the edge of the reed and then it sticks. Here in Iowa many of your dealers dont carry spare reeds. You need to make them carry spare reeds! That way we can go to a dealer and pick one up the day it happens instead of waiting to get ahold of the shop. The only place that carries reeds around Des Moines is Sportsmans Warehouse and is alittle out of the way somtimes for a $5 reed that should be carried where ever the calls are sold. Just my thoughts.

SOunds like we all need to order in some spare reeds and guts for our SMh's and I think I will get some for my Meat Cutter too. I don't know if it had to do with the cold, but in cold weather, I allways blow my calls out from the opposite end after calling and keep them stuffed into my waiders to keep them warm and prevent freezing so they are ready when I start calling that next group.

I was told by Mark only to replace the reed. That is because the more "wore" in your guts the better sound you get.

I agree, I would only use the spare guts if I was to loose the originals in the lake while changing the reed. Or like Kelly said, throw them in my buddies call to let them see how much betterthey could sound.

"Worn In" guts are the deal....can't beat the sounds. I talked to a certain "accomplished goose caller" and he told me that he breaks in his guts by hooking his call up to a vacuum. He lets the call go until the guts are to where he likes them.
I prefer to blow the piss out of the call until the guts are worn in, but to each their own.
If I were you guys, I would get yourselves a "tuning kit" and keep it in your blind bag. My tuning kit consists of a bunch of goose and duck reeds, a couple green gut sets, some saniprene (single and double) wedges, a razor knife for shaving reeds, all contained in a small little fishing storage tote...one compartment for each deal. It has and will save me many more times in the field.
Just my thoughts!!!!

I like the kit idea, organization has a tendency to make life easier. I will probably call mark this week and order in some spare parts, for my SMH and MC. Thanks for the Tip Mark.

the other reed was replaced by the foiles pro staff in like Sept or Oct. but what are the chances of that happening to both calls the same day about 10 minutes apart. that when u know gods on your side. :P

Mark, that sounds like a great idea with the little tackle box. I have tons of empty little boxes cause I just got a new fishing bag with boxes. I think I'll try your idea. I was one of the guys that my reed cracked right after iowamigr8tor's did. Luckily, I won a Meat Grinder off this sight and ended up blowing that. We did end up killin' 2 geese but let one get away.

I'll add my 2 cent here too.. The more you break your gut's in it's expected to bubble a few reeds ect ect it's not a bad thing once there broke in!! Good luck to all...

 You don't need 100s of reeds...I carry about 10 short reeds, and 10 of each duck call reed, and ten of each saniprene wedge, and a couple sets of guts for my goose calls....that's all you need. Not to mention the razor knife for shaving reeds.
