I have been doing this stuff for a few years. I have had good days when we shoot multiple limits of geese and I've had days when we've shot limits of ducks, but, I have never had days when we shoot multiple limits of geese AND ducks.
We got to a spot that we have never hunted and my buddy that supposedly knew the area ended up just following us around to houses at seven am (thank goodness good ol' boys are early to rise) looking for permission. Luckily we didn't get any yes replies at the first two houses because as we continued to move upstream the light started to break and small silouettes materialized along the edges of the ice. Around every bend the water that was still open was plastered with them waterfowls.
Then finally, we got a yes. You have never seen four guys haul so many decoys through 2+ feet of snow to waters edge. As we were setting up my friend motioned to the north and what I saw was the most amazing sight...no less than five hundred geese had just lifted and were about to make this hunting day interesting.
I have never seen so many birds in a concentrated area, I saw no less than 3,000 ducks and no less than 1,500 geese; I have never seen such a consistent flow of birds moving all the way through noon and I am sure that this is a day that I will not soon forget.
Here's my haul for the day.
