I am going to give you the best advice I know as I have six years and punching the clock. At that point they can take their deployments and shove them up their ................Nevermind. :)

First and foremost, consider your options. What are you going to get get out of it? What can you do with your training when you are out of the military? Once in, you are a number in their eyes and don't let anyone tell you differently, this is why I tell you to get yours first. Next spend that time to prep for promotion as that is what matters in the end. More rank is more money. Are you married with kids? Be prepared to say goodbye for months to a year or so. The Air Force isn't as bad as the other services but funny though the Army spends a year in the field and less on home station and they have the morale. Doesn't make sense. Do you want to go to college while in? Spec Ops is cool stuff but they are also first in and big targets when they get there. The training is grueling to say the least from what I hear. If you believe in yourself and athletic, you can do it. If you aren't in shape now, you might reconsider. Are you afraid of heights or water, then you might reconsider or prepare for a long road to overcome.

I am not trying to scare you away but want you prepared for a life changing event. I believe the military is good for most as it teaches discipline and patience, however it isn't for everyone. There are lots of people that need a good butt chewing that only an old crusty sergeant can give. Speaking of which, are you prepared to have someone screaming in your face and looking like they are going to rip your throat out and all you can say is yes sergeant. If not, you will either learn or not make it. Basic Training....................Ah the memories........ :)

Good luck to you in your decision but now for my advice. As said before, you need to talk to your family. You are at a point where you have to make a big decision. I came to a crossroads in my career and my friend, supervisor, and mentor left me with this. You have to make a decision in life and good or bad, you have to live with it. You have to do what you say and say what you do. If you decide you are going to do it, don't settle for anything less than perfection for yourself. Be fair and consistent when you lead. If you decide against the military, then so be it. Don't look back.

As for job (MOS or AFSC or whatever you want to call it), get a guaranteed job and get it in writing. Don't accept anything less. I have seen too many get put where they were needed and they didn't like it and got out. This is just two cents coming from the crusty ol' Technical Sergeant. Maybe I will see you in passing.

Good luck to you.

hey bud, +1 on what everyone else said, family comes first! Make sure you talk the recruiters, ask them ALOT of questions. Take notes and then research what they tell you. Recruiters not always have your best intrests in mind, to them it is a numbers game. If you are looking into the Spec Ops comunity, good luck! It is very doable but you don't just fall in to a job with them. As far as the army is concerned there are very difficult tryouts and cuts. Many try, but very few get chosen. If army is what you want to do start off in a Ranger Battalion or a AirBorn Battalion. That will start you off in a good direction. Either one will will give you a good starting point for Spec Ops. If that is what you want to do then set your mind to it and hang in there. Where are you from?

I am a Career Counselor for the Army. And I will start out by saying thank you for at least thinking of serving your country. There is a lot to be said for wanting to join the ranks of many heroes; especially in this time of war. Unlike a recruiter, I work with the troops who are already in and assist them re-enlistments, and any other ways I can help with career advancements.
If you ask, you will hear plenty of peoples opinions and views of the military. Everyone has different experiences once they're in. I will agree with a few points on the other posts in regards to family matters etc...
I dont know your life situation but there is a lot that the service can offer you such as steady pay, education, health benefits. These are some of the tangible benefits. But, there is much more the military can offer you such as life long friends and experiences that you will never forget.
I know if you look to go into the Combat Arms or special forces, you will not be let down. They are absolute professionals but like what was stated before, it does take some time before you get to those ranks. You cant just walk in and be a Green Beret. Maybe FreeFall319 (I think is his username) would have some good input for you. Good luck with what you choose. Do your homework and feel free to PM me.
