Alright guys i'm goin on my first sea duck hunt in Va. on the 11th of Nov. To those who have done this before what can i expect compared to just your average duck hunting. I go with this guide every year for regular duck season off Chincoteague Island, Va. and he wants to video our hunt. Im really pumped and can't wait. Will be sure to take pics and load em.

First make sure you take plenty of shells. That time of year you should start seeing the first old squaws of the year (long tails). They dont look like they are flying anywhere as fast as what they are actually are. I dont know if your hunting out of layouts or not but on your back is where it is at!!!
It is a pure adreline rush!!!!! I missed out on my first scoter hunt of the year this morning (this work thing puts a dent into my hunting time) but of my good friend from the Eastern shore did go this morning and told me the Scoters are really starting to pile up already...
Its is a blast you will really enjoy it nothing being out in open and the birds coming in with full bore flat out screaming a foot off of the water.
Here is a pic from this morning I wasnt there but seeing the pics I wish I would have been it turned into a cast and blast.

Here in old VA we are doing ok. The last date we were out was Oct 28. We did see around 100 birds, but nowhere near the #'s that we will have here in late Dec. Since we have been out, we have had two cold fronts push thru, north winds, and a full moon phase, so you should have plenty to bust open when you get here. If you have never been, here are some things to remember: (you probably know most of this, but here goes anyway).
It's not too cold here, so the boat spray in the am won't kill you going out, but you may want to dress with waterproof clothes, in layers, incase it gets to 50-60 during the day and you don't sweat your tail off.
We use dogs, so we wear waders, you won't be in the water, but the boat spray, dogs, wet decoys, it helps to wear them if you have 'em.
Bring plenty of shells........Bring plenty of shells....... bring plenty of shells
Even the best of shots, bring plenty of shells........It takes a few to get your swing and lead speed combo right where you can drop 'em.
And last, but not least.........Have FUN. Sea duck hunting, to me, is some of the best hunting. Whether you are doing it in layouts or not, you will have a blast. These birds are fast, and it makes puddle duck hunting seem like slow motion.
Good luck, and stop by and let me know how you did when you get to the Easton Festival. I'll be there somewhere.......

Yeah it's getting close to it. 2 more days. From some guys i talked to the scoters are moving in and the oldsquaw are will be soon to follow. A skunkhead it a surf scoter. In the picture listed in a previous post shows them. Solid black head with a white patch on them hence the nickname skunkhead.

Well guys i'm bummed. Actually kinda pissed but what can I do. My trip was cancelled since the warm weather has kept the seaducks out on the ocean and not in the tidalwaters and canals where my guide hunts. So he said instead of wasting my time and money for maybe a scoter or 2 if we get lucky he would rather us just not come. Oh well better luck next time.  I don't know which to be... haha
