Being new to goose calling, why do the inexpensive goose calls sound like New Years Eve party horns ? Which Foiles call do you recommend to buy? I love the sport!!

In all fairness....just about any short reed, in the hands of a new caller, will sound like a party horn!!!! But with a little practice, the party horn becomes goose sounds!!!!

To answer your question as to what Foiles call to buy....depending on your budget, I would recommend the Strait Meat Honker ($150) or the Meat Grinder ($60). Both calls are very easy to use, require little if any back pressure, and are as goosey as they come. You will get a much clearer and crisper sound from the acrylic SMH. The Meat Grinder is an injection molded polycarbonate call...a production call, but they are each hand tuned!!! Both calls sound great....and both on are my lanyard at all times!!!

I would also recommend a couple of calling instructionals as well....Strait Meat Sounds CD, Strait Meat Honker Sounds Vol. 2, and Callin' Geese the Strait Meat Way 2.0 DVD.......the DVD covers just about everything you will need and more, but it's nice to have a couple CDs for the truck to practice while you are driving.

One recommendation.....don't give up on it once you start. It is not an easy thing to master and can be VERY frustrating...but just keep plugging away. If you run into a snag, call the shop or post up and someone will help you out!!!! PRACTICE!!! PRACTICE!!! PRACTICE!!!!

I picked up the meat grinder and strait meat sounds cd and man once u get the basics wiht this call u can run with it. I previously had a primos flute(JUNK). Never got good at it so i decided to give the short reed a try after readin everything on this forum about them. as for the primos flute i let one of my buddies who is one of the best callers i have ever heard blow it and it sounded like a new years eve party maker. that call found its way back in the box it came from and is the bottom of my closet.

You wont go wrong with either of the forementioned calls, and a lot of practice. Most of the cheap calls you eleuded to that you find at discount stores and department stores are production calls, that never are really tuned or are just designed to be produced as cheap as possible. Foiles only production Goose call The meat grinder is hand tuned, and of top quality design and production. It sounds great once you get the hang of the Short reed. I have used calls by most every manufacturer out their, and the only calls you will find on my lanyard now are Foiles.

Not to go against foiles dvds or anything but the best way I learned was by Shawn Stahl's honker talk dvd. It's an awesome instructional dvd. Definately go with foiles calls.
