In North Dakota any land that is not posted is open to hunting by the public. That said, you still need to be respectful and close gates, etc. There is also an abundance of PLOTS land (public land open to sportsmen). I went this last fall, and in four days 3 of us killed a grand total of................7 ducks. It was terrible. 5 of the ducks were jumpshot. We figured out real fast that the duck action wasn't there and we concentrated on pheasants and shot our fair share. It was way too warm and way too dry for much in the way of ducks when we were there.

i went there a 2 years ago. we did ok shot 40 or so birds. theres quite a bit of public land, the land owners will almost allways let you hunt there land. we only saw 1 other groupe of hunters the whole trip. the guys i went with, went the year before and shot there limit everyday they got somthin like 130 ducks on that trip.

we go to north dakota several times a year, its hit or miss unless you know someone that lives there, that way they can let you know what is going on with the ducks & geese, we do a ton of scouting, the migration pattern changes from fall and spring, fall we hunt farther west in the state and spring snow goose we east in the state, we never run into a ton of hunting pressure, i know a lot of peaple that hunt Devils Lake and do really well, but we mainly stick to fields, the last 2 years we were lucky enough to find flooded fields and fields adjecent to small ponds,, there is plenty of places to go, do you have area in mind?

I know a guy that went out their this past year and shot a lot of ducks, he hunted witha couple of buddies no guide, he said they started off chattin up some of the locals in the coffee shops, then put like 1400 miles on a rental car scouting the birds, he said gaining access to hunt was easy that even the posted land that if you talk to the owner will usually let you hunt birds, most of the posted signs are for deer hunters. I am not sure what area he hunted in ND, but I know he has allready planned next years trip their.

I guide in North Dakota, and can tell you it is either feast or famine. this past year was really bad. no weather to speak of and no birds except for wary honkers, and lots of divers. we did have some really good shoots from the 10th -20th of oct. but that was it. It was very dry when i left in Nov. and don't think it has changed much. there is lots of land to hunt, some productive some not, but if you are a freelancer you can definitely find some good places to hunt. good luck with you search.

I went to ND last year and had fairly good success. There was a snowstorm just ahed of us that blew the ducks out. Check out www.coteaulodge.com out. These folks really work to make sure that you have a good hunt.
