Well boys, it is now 12:30 in the morning and I am getting up in about 3 hours. But anyways, I was at work when derek (Iowamigr8tor) stopped in and said that there are so many migrating birds in our area that they're showing up on the doppler radar!!! This happened once last year and we never killed a duck the following morning. What are your guys' take on the radar picking up ducks and geese cause there is so many? I think last year they must have just kept flying throughout the night and never did stop anywhere until they had to. We'll see in the morning....23 degrees when I came in the house at 11, so its gonna be nipply out there, but it may be well worth it. Hopefully, I will be putting some pics up tomorrow. :D :D :D

Well there were lots of high ducks and even saw a few flocks of snows. But all we got was 2 mallards and a widgeon. So it pretty much sucked. So basically, everytime the news has showed migrating birds on the radar hunting has sucked.

When the birds really flock up to migrate they almost put up a mirror to that since they are so reflective. but do i think it makes for a good day hunting afterwards, don't know. heres a good site to check out if you dont already know it. You can track migrators yourself once you get to understand birds to rain clouds and etc... www.wunderground.com/radar/map.asp even if you can't figure that out it's a good site for just weather knowledge in general.

I am still trying to really get a grasp on how to do it. I was taold from another user that you should always look for a new weather front coming through. Also what you can do is check the local weather for a particular area and then use that radar to determine what is and isnt waterfowl. Mainly it's used for geese since their flock numbers are so high. Another thing is that the mississippi flyway is easier to determine due to the sheer number of birds that migrate through. Hope this helps but it is tough to use. All i know is the difference with this radar is it's not a tower radar it's done with satelite, thats how it picks up large flocks reflectivity easily.
