I recently have got into competition goose calling and am interested in buying a new call. I think I am decent but I need a better call to do what I want to do. I am wondering which foiles call to get. My friend who I have been calling with blows a tru-tone acrylic and a hunter g 007 mag. His dad has a ivory SMH. WHen I first blew the ivory SMH I loved it, but I am wondering if there is any other call that may be better.

My next question is, is the ivory SMH any different from the other color SMH. I also blew a black SMH and it didn't feel as thick. I am not sure if that is because of the ivory color or what. Thanks for your help.

i think the strait meat honker is most people choice for competition calling. the meat grinder is a nice call but i dunno if anoyne is usin it for comp calling or not. there is also the market hunter that i think is a pretty nice lookin call. id say give the shop a call and tell them your dilema. 1-866-83-geese.

Don't cheat yourself get a FOILES! I think the thickness is a color issue.

The SMH is definately the best choice, if you are looking for a little more volume and back pressure, try their Competition insert for it. You will love the SMH, Their are a ton of color options, as well as wood options if you would prefer. Good luck with your contest plans.

The colors shouldn't have anything to do with thickness. Although, I have heard that certain color acrylics (black and white in particular) seem to have a difference in density (i.e., weight). The only difference I can think of is one of the calls (the black acrylic) that you blew may have had a competition insert in it...and the comp insert is bored out more than a regular SMH insert. That may be the difference you felt.

As for a comp call....definitely give the SMH with a comp insert some serious consideration. But another call to check out is the High Plains Honker (HPH). In my opinion, this call is just as loud and is just as capable on the stage as the SMH.

Just my thoughts....

Thanks a lot for your help. I still don't know what color I should get. I like the juice barrel with a black insert, but I may get a ivory barrel and a black insert. I listened to the SMH clip that is on the website and it sounds awesome! Anyway thanks again for your help.

Yep Im with Mark Spence. If you're gonna get into competitions, you better get a SMH with a competition insert. It's just simply louder if I'm not mistaken.

Choosing the color was the hardest part of the purchasing process. The reason for that is I wanted a unique color call. Took me weeks to decide.

First and foremost, make sure you test the call first. I went into a store with the mindset of buying a market hunter. I blew it and could not get a good sound ,so tried the SMH, and it was fine. I understand that it may not have been tuned properly, or misaligned, but I have heard from other sources (including the clerk) that the market hunter is not for everyone, you can either blow it really well, or not at all.

If you can blow one you can blow the other. It's all tuning bud.

That clerk is full of it.
I agrre Krees that if you can blow one you can blow them all.
I think that some stores take the call apart and then put it back together not knowing how it is supposed to sound. I went to Cabela's and blew a SMH and it was hard! The next day tried one at Scheels that had just arrived and it was the easiest thing I had ever called with. You need to go into the store knowing more than the salesmen. Most salesmen are trained and put on the sales floor for one purpose and that is to make the store $$$$, mostcould care less if you know what your getting yourself into. I say most because you may find an occasional salesperson that knows what is goin on.

The clerk is clueless, I was at BPS in St. Louis and was looking at their SMH's and found that half of them where really out of tune, the others where just a little bit, the clerk said they must be defective ones, so I retuned one and it sounded pretty good then, and "I am not a great tuner by anymeans.
