I was looking for a tighter pattern for late season geese and I wondered if there is really a difference between the two. I only shoot 3 1/2s for geese so I thought to go with extended. But does it make a difference?

Theres no restriction difference....they're wad rippers

The extended will shoot 2 3/4", 3" and 3 1/2" all about the same tighness

The long range however shoots 2 3/4" and 3" better/tighter then it does 3 1/2" due to the 3 1/2" wads are longer then the choke is designed for.

Basically, if you have a 3 1/2" capable gun---> get the extended
and if you have only a 3" gun---> get the long range
However theres alot of guys out there with the extended in their 3" guns....

I had the Extended long range for my SBE, a 3 1/2" gun.

I never shoot 3 1/2, but the extended is still the way to go just in case you need to, the "you never know" situation.

Thanks guys. That is some sound advice. I will go with the extended.

I was there and seen it...wasn't pretty. Go EXT, have to if your going to shoot 3.5, the long won't rip the wad right. Go to patternmasters website, they explain it.

the length of the tube is nothing more than a way of matching your shot shell's wad length. If you want a tighter pattern with a PM tube then go up in shot size. BB's and above will be very tight. 2's will be more of a full.....4's a modified.....below gets pretty loose. This is why the tube works great on upland and waterfowl. 3" shells from a 12ga will tend to give you the best pattern because of the amount of shot being forced down the barrel. Most times the 3.5's carry too much load to really get great results. I shot 3" shells out of my extended and have never had a problem picking up long cripples.
