my group is kicking around the idea of freelancing canada this year or trying to anyway, just wondering what everyones experiences have been up there. we are really wanting to target black geese and then ducks. kicking around saskatchewan or manitoba but also open to alberta. anyone have any insight they would like to shed on this subject?

We do a, do it yourself hunt in Saskatchewan every september. It does take a little homework, but a lot of fun and doesn't break the bank. We found an area that doesn't have any outfitters, and few locals hunt birds. (the hard part) Most of the grain farers want us to come in and kill birds (mostly snows).
Pick out an area on the map, find somewhere to call home base, like a hotel. Request a land owner grid map for the area. Then you head up and start to scout. Drive untill you find birds, lookup who the land owner is and ask permission. We take some gifts, hats from our DU chapter, venison or goose sausage.
Over the coarse of a week, we do three snow goose hunts and four days of duck/canada goose hunts. We usually limit on the snows and get about 2/3 of the way to our duck goose limits. http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp350/jaysweet3/Canada003.jpg

+1 on the above advice.
Once you find an outfitter free area be prepared to put on lots of miles scouting. Bring a cell phone and get a local phone book to calll landowners.
We have found that spending time in town (grocery store, bars, gas stations, diners) leads you to lots of contacts as the locals all know each other. It gets easier each year as you start to build up a 'catalog' of spots to hunt and get to know the locals.
