Strait Meat

Just wanted to clear up a couple of things. After the contest Sat. night I went up to get a score sheet and very simply stated my opinion of the contest on how it could be improved to Sean Mann, who I would like to call a friend of mine (who also plays the drums). Several people were there including about 3 other callmakers who had callers in the event. My interest are this:
This is The Worlds Contest it should have at least 1 judge from the east coast, 1 or 2 from Canada, 1 from the west coast, and 1 or 2 from the midwest. Sean said the waterfowl committe tryed to do this called over 50 people with no takers then politely told me to get involved and help out by joining the waterfowl commitee and I said I would . I will be glad to help look for these qualified judges. The waterfowl contest had plenty of money to spend to fly judges out and put them up as FA alone paid $10,000 cash out and entry fees are $100 each. I think the callers would rather have a $6000 purse and qualified judges from across the world than the money. I am in no way saying the winners didn't sound awesome and that there was anything unfair about it, other than I think after these callers work so hard to practice, pay for plane trips $100-150 hotels and rent a car they deserve the best. I am not saying the judges didn't do their best, and are not well respected people in this industry, what I am saying is calling has went to an all time extreme and with all the new sounds it takes judges that have heard all this and judged this to qualify to judge the worlds. I am also saying there are very different styles of calling from the east to the west all sounding awesome but they are sometimes VERY different. I personally like to hear all the sounds from talented callers across the country. This is why the callers deserve to have judges up to date from all across the country to get a totally fair shake. I have seen in the past callers from the east that are awesome callers come to the midwest and not do so good when they really sounded good. This is just an example.
2nd thing is the scoring system at the world. 0-100 or 70-100 every round not sure which but I know it is 1 of the 2. Every contest That I have seen across the country is a 10 point spread, 70- 80 80-90, 90-100 that keeps all the callers on an even tilt. For example, if caller #1 gets a low score just because He was #1 and sounded great then He has a chance to make it up in the next round and get back into the game as He should. It is really hard to make up 15-20 points and make a comeback. Or maybe after listening to 26 callers You get lost in the shuffle. No making it up. A perfect example was last Sat. night. the score sheet shows Big sean winning thye 1st and last rounds, then how do You lose?? In a 10 point spread the winners of 2 out of 3 would probably always win not the caller who only won 1 round. I am not trying to take anything away from the winer. He is an awesome guy and sounded great as I told Sean. I am just saying it should be 10 point rounds as any other contest. One of the reasons some don't like this is ties, after practicing for countless hours, spending all this money to get to a contest do you really think anyone cares if they have ties ? Not the callers who are the ones who matters.
3rd The callers area. In duck calling we all know you have to face straight ahead, where at any contest that these callers called at in the world before going to Easton did they have a blind to call in and face strait ahead?? This is an integral part of the callers routine and always has been. I personally listen to My callers and walk around them telling them what part to face the judges and when not to. I had 1 caller who if he blew to the audience he sounded way worse so he always was sideways or faced away. He went on to win the world. Most parts of the routine are blown sideways or away and the low sounds and feeding sounds are faced at the judges. The callers who are the best know all these tricks, again part of the routine. Judges don't want the callers blowing at them?? Don't judge or suck it up, this is a part of their routine they have been doing all year, don't handcuff them.
Don't want to sound like sour grapes, I just thought it was time to speak up, like when Sean had a caller walk up during Our conversation and ask for notes from the judges, He said they had paper and pencil there and Jeff asked for this years ago. Well maybe all this will make OUR World contest better and that is all I am after so I spoke up, and said My peace. No intentions of making anyone angry or upset just tryin My best to help all the callers. Who knows maybe next year we will have 60 callers there instead of 26.
Thanks to all the people who stopped by the booth and checked out all the products and have a great season as that is what its really all about!!

Thanks and GOOD Huntin!!! Jeff
