I am trying to pick a good starter gun. My main decision is 20 gauge or 12?
I am leaning toward 20 due to the fact that at some point my son will be able to use it if my wife does decide she would like to use a 12. I think she could pretty easily handle a 12 she is a former college basketball player and very athletic but just want to make a good investment. Anyone have any suggestions on a softer shooting affordable 20 or 12. I'm thinking or just going with a 20 gauge 870. Of course I could get "her" a new SX3, SBEII, or you know for "her"....

I think the 870 20 gauge would be a good choice. My brother owns a 870 Light Weight and myself and him both, love that gun. You could carry it all day. Only concern would be recoil factor and you can't shoot 3inchers (at least with his 870 light weight). Major concern mite also be gun fit, as most women are not made for the size of the gun. You mite want to check into the youth model if she has smaller features. I wouldn't overlook Mossberg's either. That said, if she is comfortable handling a regular size shotgun and can handle the recoil of a 12 gauge I would also look into the Benelli Nova.
Let her make the decission, take her to a gun shop and see which one feels, fits and weighs good for her. She'll be a better shooter in the long run having a gun "fit" for her.

75% of women shooters are cross eye dominant so find that out first. Beretta 391 and shim it up or Browning break open. If your wife has done up finger nails it's been my feeling that the break open is the way to go since they don't have to push the shell in for a bottom feeder.
Best thing you can do is find a range that has a decent shooting coach. Make life easy on you and her.

if she has her own gun you may be in serious trouble later
i'd let her pick so she doesn't feel like your pushing her into something and you get in trouble later. Or if you can find other female shooters maybe that would be a good avenue for advice.

General fitting..... 20ga Montefeltro. Seems to be the gun most women I know like for comfort and it doesn't kick a ton.
Some like the Remington 1187.
Best bet.... take the advise of some that have suggested go try guns out. Just like a car, truck, duck or goose call. Get what YOU want and what fits.

I got my wife a Tristar 20 gauge semi auto and she loves it. Its been a great gun for us! We took it to a gunsmith and had it fitted to her, I would suggest having that done. She has shot hundreds of rounds through it with no problems. I used it a lot before we had it fitted to her and was really impressed with it!!!!!

The 870 would be a decent gun you can pick them up pretty cheap and are as reliable as they come for the money. Other wise if you want an inexpensive auto check into that Charles Daly auto 20 guage. Under four bills and its available in camo and youth models.

my wife shoots a beretta 390 12 ga and shoots it very well. I had the stock shortened to fit her put on a good recoil pad. She uses it for trap sporting and hunting.

id stick with a 12. theres not that mutch extra felt recoil, and usually the 20's are lighter guns and have greater felt recoil anyway.
idealy, you could set her up with a nice soft shooting gas operated semi auto.
for price wise, i really like the older Franchi semis, chambered for 3.5" great guns. i shoot an xtrema for my main gun, but I dont hesitate to break out the Franchi.
the inertia driven Stoegers are great guns for the price also.
my wife uses a Browning Gold. she can shoot 3" shells all day. she likes the gun cause it has a shorter lenght of pull than most and is pretty soft shooting.

We started to look around and it looks we are definitely going with a 12. She is 5'11" so size was never really an issue. I think I will be saving up to get a nice gas operated semi. That way we can both use it and I'll always have the 870 as the go to in case. We are going to go up to the Olin Winchester range and have her shot a couple different models. Thanks for all the input Ill keep y'all updated if a purchase is made.
