Can any pro staffers or other accomplished callers help out with the spit note. I am really struggling with it, I practice a lot, and the tahoo just isn't cutting it for me. Any suggestions? Also, what does a willis note sound like.

I haven't purchased any of the foiles calling tapes or videos, but I know where I learned the spit note. I bought the Pit Boss at the local hunting store, and the CD that came with it had Richie McKnight demonstrating. He explained the spit note very well

The willis note is just an extension of the last part of a spit note.

Heres my best explanation. It is all dependent on backpressure. You really need to shut down the end of the call to get the reed to lock up.

I put my tongue right behind my top front teeth then drop it and burst of air very quick. Like your spitting something off your tongue. Then extend the note and release the back pressure with your fingers. Practice locking up the reed first, when you have the first part down then put them together. I always break sounds down into parts, master the first then the second then put it together.

Thank you for the detailed reply. It has been very difficult for me to find detailed instruction. I have Jeff's 2.0, but he barely covers it all. Is the willis and train notes just variations of the spit note? I will reply on the progress once I get a chance to practice.

What the heck is the spit note?????????

I can lock it up, and get somewhat of the right sound out of it, but something is not quite right. The sound just isn't quite snappy enough. Or there any way that I could get a hold of someone who has this sound mastered, b/c I think if you could hear me blow it, you could help me out.

Heres another thing...I can only do it real well on my HPH because it's tuned a little light. I use my HPH for finishing so It's tuned soft and makes the spit real easy. On my other calls it doesnt sound as good and isnt as easy because they are tuned much tighter. The HPH IMHO is the easiest call to do the spit note on...well that and my cackler. I learned it on my cackler cuz it will almost do it by itself.

The spit note is really just variations of a quick honk or greeting note. When done correctly, it can be very deadly in the field, and a valuable asset on the contest stage. Jeff doesn't talk about or use it much, but it is very popular with other accomplished callers. The high majority of contest callers use it in routines in a variety of ways that sound incredibly goosey. As an aspiring contest caller myself, I am trying to expand my vocabulary to keep up with the amazing talent of today's callers.

if you can get a copy of it...Dave Smith's instructional CD is good..
He does a good job of explaining another mothod of doing the spit note....

he emphasizes sticking the reed first and formost and then going from there....once you stick it you just back off enough to let the reed vibrate...

just a little different approach to it....
