I have had a young hunter out with us and used a 20ga. He was using 2 3/4 BB shot and he had the oppurtunity to kill one with us. He used a modfiy tube and about 20 yards was his limit we gave him. I am sure there are better ranges and other tubes to use but this was what he had available for him.

I shoot a 28, and sometimes a 20... I have no problem shooting any of the 1 ounce STEEL loads. With a 20 my confidence is anything inside of 30 yards.

I shoot bismuth out of the 28 and i'm on anything insode of 25.

Jeff shot a Benelli 20 gauge the whole duck season here at the club...he plans on shooting it a bunch again this year...I watched him stone a greenwing teal at over 70 yards! I kid u not....

Both of my older sons started with a 20g and had no problem taking birds out to 30 yds. They used #2 3" rounds and Winchester youth modle pumps.

a 20 gauge will kill anything a 12 gauge will, use the same shot sizes and chokes you would with a 12 guage. If your gonna try to strech shots out past 40 yards i would use an improved modified. The down fall of some of the 20 gauge loads are less shot per load and lower velocites. By using a slightly tighter choke for longer shots will help keep your pattern dense a little farther. A 20 guage with an improved modified choke tube or Get a tube thats "extended range" and you can consistantly kill birds as far as you would with a 12.

Legband is right. Most all the guys i work with are going to 20's 3 inch. Perfect for timber hunting.

My motto is, "Go big or go home" , I think it applys nicely here. :)

haha i agree with you.... i think old age might be wearing some shoulders down:wink::wink: you can hit a teal with a single pellet and it will go down. but hitting it is the hard part. shooting a goose with 4 shot 3 1/2" 12ga at 75 yards is impressive, you can hit a goose at 30 yards with all three shells and that sucker still may not fall

You can kill anything with a 20 guage you can with 12 guage...If you use 4 shot on geese, you could mount a punt gun on the front of your boat with a pound of shot rammed down the barrel and not kill a goose with 4 shot past 20 yards. Someone that knows what they are doing and what the APPROPRIATE shot sizes are to use on ducks and geese wont even know the difference between the 20 and 12

It has nothing to do with old age, going big, or who can shoot the furthest. Heck, it doesn't even matter who can shoot them the closest!

It's about taking the time to learn what you are capable of doing, and getting 100% out of the gear you choose to use. You have to be able to verify the distance, and then having both the confidence and the ability to put the shot on the bird at that distance. This takes practice.

I hunt fullbodies, sometimes silos, sometimes shells, sometimes floaters, and every once in a while a combination of all of them. I have no problem going to the field with my 28, a 20, the 410, or even a 12 or 10 gauge. Are there days that I am out and pass on a 30 yard shot because I am holding a 410. Absolutely. Some days I pass on that same shot with a 12. More often than not I'm walking out of the field with a 28 over one shoulder, three geese in the bag, and 3 empties in my pocket.

Shoot whatever gives you the most fulfillment in the field, and whatever is going to give you the best odds. If you believe 1 9/16 of shot coming out of a 10 gauge is what kills birds. GO KILL THEM! Have fun, and make sure you post your pictures.

It's not old age, It's just something new to be honest. We don't really take 75 yard shot's and most of our gunning is usually give or take in the 30-35yd area max.I have smashed birds for years with the 12 and 10 and now I just want what to me is just that little extra challenge I guess you could say.Pass up on that 60 yd. shot and call them in within range for my 20 would be very satisfying to say the least, but to each his own.

Guy's does anyone have any experience with a Winchester 1300 20 gauge? The reason is because I am doing some work for my neighbor and he has one that he never used it's like new so since I am looking for one I am thinking about just getting that one, it has all the chokes and everything not a scratch on it.

Thanks Gary, he said the same thing it's really smooth. He has a ext. full choke screwed into it now but I will have to pattern it once I get it and see what works best.I'll try some steel and maybe some Kent Impact's I used them before in my 12 and crushed stuff bad with it.Also Rascal if you read this, do you know what shell's/choke Jeff was shooting?Again thanks for the response's shooting a 20 is something I wanted to do for a few sason's now but never did, this year it's happening finally.

Kent is personally my favorite steel shot for factory ammunition,They seem to use quality steel shot and good wads. When i use factory ammo thats what i prefer.
