View Full Version : How Many Bands? No B.S'n!

I was just wondering how many bands people like Jeff and other Pro-Staffers have. All of 'em. Reward bands, neck bands, miner bands, etc. I been hunting hard for five years now, probably have been part of hunts totaling about 1000 ducks and about 500 snow geese ( numbers are real rough estimates ) and have seen only about 15 banded birds. Myself, I have 2 bands - Mottled Duck this year, and a BW Teal 3 yrs. ago. I know location and types of birds harvested (Mallards and Honkers I hear are banded the most) play a major role in retrieving banded birds, I just thought this would be an interesting topic.
If only they banded the crap outta Gadwalls! LOL!

Im not too fond of the guys I run into which so much aluminum on their neck they need need a ciropractor in the pit-only to tell me 95% of it was from birds that only made a 1 mile flight path. How does that help information recovery for conservation? Just another status hunter I dont want my sons and nephews to look up to...
Oh, ridge, Im not speakin of you, just got me thinkin of the whole subject. haha.
H-unit
i do go to the chiroprator not because of ***elry but a fractured (C 4-5) from a constuction accident. BTW just happens were we hunt is the same area they band the birds, so most dont get a chance to migrate but to become a local statistic.

I have 3 Goose bands, 1 or them is a $100 reward(Double Band), both of them banded close to where they were shot. One of them was 18 and it really makes you think "man this bird has seen it all, and i was lucky enough to out smart him". The other band was only a couple of years old.
Kinda hard to help shooting banded birds near a banding site, or knowing where a bird was banded and sorry but if I see a band Im going to shoot it. No offense.

unfortanatley the nesting and banding locations are the same which is roughly 1/4 mile or less from where we hunt , yea i know kinda a $hitty for the birds and conservation, but were not lookin to kill just banded ones just happens to fall that way

do the farmers band them just to see where their pigeons are going or whats the deal? Does anybody know about any pigeon banding in MO?

not trying to hijack the thread guys, sorry ^^
Ive shot one banded drake mallard. It was three or four years and banded in North Dakota.
Ridge
actually the farmers band em because there homing pigeons, and they also radio collar them. i personally havent shot any, but have a freind who hammers the heck outta them.

I agree with H-Unit...thats not cool hunting a place just because they know that geese or ducks were banded there, maybe only weeks before that. In fact, I think I would be kinda ashamed of putting bands that I killed like that on my lanyard.
But as far as bands go, I have 8 honker bands (1 $50 reward band), 5 shot last fall and 3 this fall so far. I've got the big 0 for duck bands.
KILLER
im not the only one who hunts this area, theres about 8 privately owned islands 1/4 mile away, besides state land thats only 1/2 mile away. probobly 25-40 guy's hunt this area at all times so i do agree to a point, but also theres fields and golf courses we hunt that have the the same banded birds and also some fields in the next town about 15 minutes east where they also band birds so i guess im in a catch 22 situation here.only 6 of my bands were shot in my county in 8 yrs the others were from management units in other countys private and state land , totaling 12yrs worth of hunting.
H-UNIT @ KILLER
just a clarification here,
the DNR bands birds in all my surrounding counties,so its very hard to not shoot local birds,so its a bonus to get bands but i wished more were migrators, also i either hunt with my son or one or two other freinds so the amount of bands i have ive worked hard for. 3 of my bands came from other states ,missouri ,thunder bay ontario, kingsville ontario.im not like some of my other freinds who go six guy's to a feild and smack the crap otta them and get 9 bands in 12 or 18 bird limits, day in and day out. im in it for the hunting not the bands,so i hope you understand my situation i have no choice theres just lots of local ganders anywere i go within 50 miles of where i live.
REDLEGG93
no the pigeons are not migrators, banded and radio collared for local trackin only

barry- don't mind these guys; killin geese is killin geese. I'm ready to travel for one of those bands lol.
no problem think they misunderstood a post i put in and assumed i got all my bands in one location only
KILLER those 8 bands ya got do you know where they were banded at and how far from ya, where they also locals or migrators?????????? know ya been smacken em hard!!! just curios.
also its not by choice where we hunt, this area has been hunted for ever by everyone and the DNR picked this location for banding not by us its actually in the city limits and just east is where everyone hunts.

In my sixteen years waterfowl hunting I've run across a few bands along the way.
1 Black duck
1 wood duck
7 mallards
26 goose bands
We don't get many banded birds around where I hunt and alot of them are migraters. My black duck was from northern Quebec and I've got geese from all over northern Ontario.I was especially lucky this year and have shot three geese from Nunavut.I personally don't care where the band is from,I'm always happy to get one!!

Hunters Ridge.... ha... i wouldnt care if i had to hunt the same place everyday just to shoot banded geese.... killing geese gives me the same feeling no matter where i am ... urban style hunting or in canada.... i will come up there and bump elbows to shoot bands anyday... dont feel bad for killing them.,, heck shoot em' all and fill up that lanyard... i grew up in michigan south of you about 2 hours... i know how the bands are around here, and the days you get lucky you can really get a bunch of bands from one flock and the next day you might not get any....i have about 60 goose bands just from Michigan banding the locals....i like them just as much as much as i like the other 60 bands from migrators or other states across the county... they all fit the same around my lanyards .... this year so far i have given away 7 of them and only kept 4.... my friends benefit from hunting with me because i am just too nice of a guy and i let them take them.... its all in good fun though, i probably have enough anyway.... sean~~~

The way I look at it is A bird down is a bird down. I dont care if the farm or place next to where you hunt bands birds. If I pay for a [BLIND, A PIT, or a Truck,, and can shoot birds out of it ,Then By Dam I hope they have bands on there legs. If not O O O Well.

Ridge, I love ya man, but your always missing the point haha.
Dont have problems with guys who hunt what God gave em, or what they have been hunting for years. Just guys who make a point to shadow these banding sites to up there bling.
If you make a point to do this, how can you be proud of anything hanging from your neck? Really?
Still, remember, this is all coming from the guy who said ZERO.

good point.... thought you and killer may have misunderstood my post so i clarified it ,but also i dont brag to everybody YEA i shot all these from point X but i also see your point on conservation and migration..... just another good debate between freinds 8)

H-Unit...not to sure why you would "not be fond of" guys that kill locally banded birds....they are lucky but no reason to look down on em...what do you expect them to do.... not shoot geese becuase they live close to where they banded em.....or try to pick out unbanded geese so they don't skew the conservation data?
In PA you are really relegated to PA banded honks from the refuges except for the SJB geese they get in NW PA.
I know 3 local guys that hunt near the middlecreek refuge 1 guides and kills more geese than me and has enough bands to fill several lanyards one kills a more normal amount of birds and has been doing it for 40+ years I don't begrudge them their success on local birds....
I'm 37 and with 25 years of waterfowling I have 1 bib collar(refuge 50 miles away 9 year old bird), 1 snow tarsal, 1 canada tarsal, 1 $500 reward band banded 2 years ago about 30 miles from me, and about 20 regular bands....I hunt several areas where they band and over the last 10 years of really stacking up the geese (300 year) we still kill about a 3- 5 percent banded which is better than the 1 % they actually band.
Good luck fellas and when you get in the banded hammer em!

2 geese
1 redhead
1 farm duck (i think). it was all tan and had a mallard bill but was only half the length. it had gadwall wings. it came in with a flock of about 200 mallard/blackducks. the band wasnt your typical band. it was banded on both legs with flouresent pink zip ties.

You shouldn't feel bad for shooting local banded birds. There isn't anything wrong with it. What are you supposed to do not shoot geese because they band a lot around your area? Whack and stack em who cares where they are from. But maybe if you guys didn't hunt them a few would make it down my way.

The band I shot this year was banded in the same city, not sure where. It was this years bird. I'm not shy about shooting birds, banding area or not. I'm a meat hunter. Providing for my family. If I happen to be in a banding area...so be it.

Barry, all the banded birds that I have killed have been banded in Iowa. I did shoot one in Illinois, but just across the Miss. River. So I see your point. But I DO NOT know where they are banding birds. But I think the closest banding spot to where we hunt here in central Iowa is about 60 miles or a little more.
Oh and btw, Dekker (iawaterfowler88) killed a banded honker this evening in a field that I got permission to. Oh well, Im happy for him. After all, he has 2 and I have 8.
