What was the worst dog moment of the year? This is the negitive thread.

My worst moment was calling the dog back after a 200 yard blind retrieve because a coyote came out barking and my dog is a wimp. She has been beaten up by a pug, poodle, weiner dog, and a papion. So a coyote would kill her and not worth it so the wimp was called back with no friggin goose.

Worst momment by far was when we were on the river at a reserved blind which was 1 1/2 miles from the parking lot. We passed another group at a different blind and they had a dog...this stupid dog followed us the last 1/2 mile of our hike and started running around the decoys as we were setting up. He then started to pick up our decoys and run around with them. We tried yelling down river for the other hunters to come get him but no reply. So sunrise roles around and the ducks are thick we were getting them into gun range ...and next thing you know this stupid dog started running into the spread barking at the ducks. So you could imagine my frustration at this point...An hour later the guys from down river come and get the dog. If we wouldnt have shot our limit of 24 this dog may have been shot. We ended up bagging our ducks and got to the parking lot and these guys had the balls to tell us well at least you guys got to see what a good bird dog she was. I wanted to snap. I kept my cool and then asked them how many birds they got and they told us 3.....karma...maybe

just happened today. my friends dog was with us. we were feed hunting ducks and there was a flock of 100 + and one came into land while the rest were still circling, the damn dog jumped out of the blind to go get the duck. scared everything away.

Last year I was paddling to shore from my blind with Scout in the canoe, similar to my avatar only with two bags of decoys, a blind bag and my gun. Prior to this day I had some ideas about hunting from the canoe with Scout; so, during the summer I was sending him on training retrieves from the canoe, then assisting him to climb back in afterward.

Back to the day in November (air temp-35 degrees; water temp-about the same): About 150 yards from shore I threw a bumper and sent him in after it. When he launched off the port rail I didn't lean far enough to the starboard side (necessary w/all the gear); the canoe did a 90 degree port-side tip, then right back to it's uporight position. Into the water I went while all the gear remained in the canoe. I wasn't wearing a belt so my chest waders instantly filled up with water. In a millisecond I thought, if I can't stay on the surface, I'll ditch the waders and swim to the canoe. As luck would have it, the wind blew the canoe right into my hands. Meanwhile Scout was swimming around me trying to lick my face, thinking I decided to join him in the water. As I paddled to shore I knew I had to keep moving in order to prevent any level hypothermia from setting in.

Luckily, I never got cold cold but certainly learned a few lessons: Always wear the wader belt; always wear a life jacket in the canoe; and, as much as I can try to pretend, I'll never be Jeremiah Johnson.

 I just sat back and read the posts on this thread and realized that I failed to mention that I lost my labs many years ago. I didn't want to "trump" the thread, But I tiptoed around it for awhile and finally read it; my reply was the first thing that came to mind. sorry

Hunters Ridge - glad I'm not the only one who has problems with the mud. The marsh mud here is deep and sticky. My dog hates it and has been stuck a couple of times. To the point he's almost shy of the mud.

Couple of seasons ago, my dog went after a duck on my partner's side of the blind. He got it and my partner (outside the blind) reached for it and yelled loudly "give". My dog doesn't respond to "give" or to yelling. My dog clamped down on the duck and refused to give it up for him. Once he got to me, I guess he was so frightened that he wouldn't give it to me either. I couldn't even pry his mouth open. I had to walk him to the blind and once inside the blind, he dropped the duck. When I reached for it, he snapped and growled as if to bite me. My dog and my partner have not hunted together since. He takes his dog. When we don't hunt together, I take mine.
