I was doing a little fishing today and noticed some very large snails in the water along the bank. There were probably close to 50 or 75 within a few feet of the bank. Thinking about escargot! Any one know if these are safe and any good to eat???

Here is what they look like...

At one of our ponds we hunt those things stick on to the decoys like crazy. Theres a ton of them to. Ive herd the ducks love em. But I dont know if it would be a good idea to eat them.

Were these in a river, if so , which one?

If not, I can't tell by the pics if they are native snails or invasive snails that have made their way into the Missouri River Watershed...I've eaten "escargo" in restaurants before and it wasn't for me, so I can't imagine the wild ones might not be much better.

They were in a pond but we were a ways from the river. There were a TON of duck and geese out there that were diving to eat. I guess it is possible they were eating snails...

Guess I'm going to have to try and whack some early season and inspect their gizzard to see if that is what they are eating!

Its possible the ducks are eating them, but most ducks normally will feed on on Mussel's, however, geese and swans will gorge themselves on just about any aquatic snail.

Good plan, shoot the heck out of em this fall and do some investigating.!!!
