View Full Version : Might be a dumb question...
If you were to put one of those GHG "stretchy cords" on a strap weight, do you guys think you could accomplish the same thing as one of those keel grabber weights and a stretchy cord?
I have a ton of strap weights laying around and I was thinking about using a setup like this.
Anybody done it?

It would basically be the same thing.

i have stretchy cords and strap weights and it works just as good as a keel grabber. its harder getting the cord through the hole on the strap since its not designed for the strap weight i used a screw driver to stretch the hole .

I have that on a few of my decoys, its just harder gettin it through those little holes like he said
It will work just fine....
Save some money, go to a medical supply store and buy some surgical tubing, I've done this and it works like a charm and a fraction of the cost.

I've heard some bad reviews on them b/c of dry rotting. Once they dry rot you'll lose weight and possibly decoys!!!!

The Averys have not dry rotted after three seasons. I store them in the off season with weight attached to the keel
The other brand - they do dry rot.

I'm approaching year 3 with Ace's and no dry rots or tears.
I also have alot of medical tubing, hogrings, and what not I am using and same, for a fraction of the cost.
I know guys that store them with the weights off the keel so they aren't stretching and guys that store them on.
The biggest thing I think is guys don't measure it out right, so when they go to ravel them up they are either too lose and fall off or they try to wrap the bungee until its taunt and overstress it.

I wrapped half the decoys with ACE half with Avery. Both have 3 seasons under them.
I didn't do any of that fancy "measuring" you mentioned. I figured thats what the bungee was for. Compensation. Some were overstressed, and that overstress increased the dry rot. Some wore out after one season (2 or 3 out of 8 dozen), most have lasted the three seasons. A couple Averys have broken. But no dry rot.
I have replaced the broken and some of the rotted ones with surgical tubing.
I never had this problem with string and machine nuts.

Also depends where you hunt i guess also.. you hunting ponds or rivers?? Most of the results i've heard are coming from the SALTY chesapeake bay, they might have a factor also

flooded pasture ponds and the occasional muddy marsh. Every once in a great while a salt marsh. But not often enough that it has anything to do with it.

I only hunt "unsalted" fresh water, so I have never experienced the corrosion factor.
I'll tell ya a rigging setup I was highly impressed with I checked out recently was Rig Em Right.
Especially for the guy who hunts alot of managed areas, shallow areas, etc. I was impressed.

I got hit in the face with one of the bungees and weights last year, thats one thing I don't like is trying to wrap them up when it is at zero or below and I have gloves on and they get awfully slippery.
I would prefer to just use strap weights really, but someone made me a bunch of aces and they do the job I suppose. I have always been impressed just for the fact at least 70% of our season is spent below freezing and I would say of that 70%, a good portion is 15 degrees or below before windchill.

we have most of our Bay rigs just strap wieghts or long lines...most pond or river set ups(mallard, blackduck, pintails, geese) are rig em rights.... buddy of mine made his own just like rig em right and half the cost...

Another thing you can do is take an old inner tube and cut it into 1 inch wide rings. Tie the rings above your weight and wind up the cord like usual. When you get to the end, stretch the ring over top of the decoy and you're done. You can also go around the head or tail, too. Which ever works best. Your weight is always at the bottom and never dings up the decoy.

I have roughly 5 dozen Ace's that are 3 years old and i have'nt had one issue with them. I do leave them disconnected durring the off season to prevent them from stretching out & they work great.
To answer your question. Yes, you can use them. Just modify the weight and stap them up.
