Just wondering how long it takes you guys to brake in a set of guts and is there anything i can do to get them broke in faster? I have had the same set in my SMH for about 6 months and blow it about 3 or 4 times a week and there is some very small marks on the guts. But not enuf to make a difference.

It took me about 7 mo. to break in a set. I practiced with that call around 5 times a week, about a half hour at a time. It may be faster than that for other guys, but that is what it took me.

Just keep blowing man. Sounds like you have a good start on the guts anyways. They should be good now and will only get better.

Just like previous posts, keep blowing. Blow as hard and as long as you can. Once you get the grooves started, it seems to go pretty fast.

You could use a vacuum but it's a bit loud and annoying

Don't want to hijack this thread...but I am a little lost.
I have heard "Broke in guts" a million times...not sure what i thought it meant. What does it mean? and what does it do to the call? I know some of you said it puts grooves in it...Also, what is the main advantage of having this? Does this improve the sound quality, or ease of blowing? Again, sorry to hijack, but just curious. I have had a SMH for one year, I didnt blow it much the first hunting season as i was getting used to it...the past month i have had it in my vehicle and blow it daily. Anyone have pictures of "broke in guts" and "Non broke in guts"
Thanks guys!

Guts are like work boots. At first when you get them they are stiff and take a while to get used to. Eventually as time goes by they break in. Basicly the more you blow the call you will end up with grooves from the reed vibrating,i personally think all the moisture from blowing the call softens up the guts slightly too and aids in the break in process but im not sure. What i have noticed from guts i have blown for along time is that reed gets a little more freedom due to the grooves and will give you a more hollow goosy type sound. I personally feel that with guts i have blown for along time i have more control with the call and can get alot of better low end moans. Ive bought worn guts and they work fine but are not the same as ones that are worn by blowing the call yourself. Worn guts are nice but a new set of standard guts is fine to. New guts still sound fine.

I herd the vacuum is not that grate because your not hitting the notes that you do when you just blow it normal. Is there any truth to that or is it a bunch of BS? And on top of it i think you would get allot more practice doing it your self then just hooking it up to a vacuum and taring through a bunch of reeds

Ive never personally used a vacum ive heard of guys doing it. I would just blow in the call yourself instead of trying shortcuts. Its good to blow in the call and practice and the more you practice the better the caller you will be and you will be breaking in your guts at the same time.

The vaccum will do the trick but like you said why not get the practice in and get to know your own call.... also like you said reeds would get wrecked if you use the vaccum.

Ive done a couple things to help speed up the process.
One that seasm to work is to boil the tone board. I boild it for like 5-10 minutes, then put it back in a call and start blowing.
Once I get the start of the outside groves, Ive also taken axacto knife, and lightly scrapped away using the indents as guides. it helps

Thanks...That is what i assumed. I can tell, from the time i first got the SMH i have, to what it is now is a big difference. I am sure I am 100 times better then when i first started. But things for filling me in!

I tried the boiling trick and my DRC guts were all messed up such as a curved gut system. So I thought they wouldn't work worth crap. Man was I wrong. They are pure goose now!
I don't know weather to thank you or what because it wrecked the guts but made them goosier at the same time

I think i might have to order some extra guts and give that a try. Has anyone else tried the boiling trick? and did it work?
