What would be a better call for a beginner to run? Would it be the timer Rattler or the Strait Meat Mallard? Is wood or acrylic better? I will be hunting in closer quarters not alot of open water and such. Also is the Market Hunter goose call a good one to learn on also?

i prefer the timber rattler, but both calls can be learned very quick.

as far as the market hunter goes, Id have to say a strait meat honker would be a easier call to learn for a beginner. but the market hunter is a good call once you learn it

Im not a foiles staffer but i would say the TR and for the goose call to learn on i would say a SMH, wood and acrylic are both good. My 2 cents

the wood strait suzys are sweet too!agree on that !!!!!
if i were u i'd go with the timber rattler do 2 ur most hunted situations u mentioned in ur post....
i prefer the wood calls do 2 them being alittle mellower then the acrylics .
alot of it is personal preference and a certain tone or sound ur lookin 4 .
wood calls can b alittle touchy in certain weather witch may cause it 2 swell or shrink more then u'll have in a acrylic call, and if ur not familiar with the tunnin aspect of the call a acrylic call may better suit u !!!not a staffer but hopefully my .02 can help

If you were to pick between the 2 Id go with the Timber rattler. If you could pick any for a beginner Id go with the strait timber to strait suzy. Market hunter is a great call to learn on. I learned on a strait meat honker though. Both are easy to opperate.

Double reed Timber Rattler in acrylic would be an excellent choice for a guy just starting out.and the smh, or the high plains honker would be a good choice to learn on.its your choice as to wether you get this one in wood or acrylic.if you hunt mostly water then the walnut, or flamed hedge hph would be a great choice.alot of it is personell preference, buy what you like, then start practice, and keep it up. GOOD LUCK.............................................. .R

Is a wood call really that much more maintenance? I have heard that they are more realistic than acylic. Just asking questions before I buy one.

Just asking questions before I buy one.i probably just screwed my self , but i've only had 1 come out of tune . uptil a few years ago i only had wood calls and never had an issue ... the 1 i did have a tune problem with was when i moved the call rack under the heat vent , and only noticed it cause i had just tunned it the night before and it was totally different in the mornin {mayb somthin else but i related it 2 the dry heat }!!! the only other issue i ever had with the wood is the bands comin off or gettin loose . looks like the newer calls have a pin in them 2 stop that .....

I usually rub my wood calls down with lemon oil when i get them. Then maybe once or twice throughout the year. Mine have been rained on and even dropped in the lake and they still work fine. Its all a matter of preferance sound wise. Ive always preferred wood for hunting calls on both ducks and geese. I always have an acrylic goose call with though. That high crack you get out of acrylic is nice to have at times. On windy days especially that high crack is nice to get there attention.
