How do you guys feel about hunting from a layout blind if you have an uncamoed gun, wether it be black, brown, etc? Do you think lots of geese will see it or what.

I use a remington 1187 premier, no camo, just shiny stuff. Only the tip of the barrel sticks out I can't say they see it or not, but you could always put some cloth camo tape on the end of the barrel.
not really how much is really showing in a layout blind! only a little of the barrel. hell ive hunted with guns that have a polished receiver and sunglasses that looked like mirrors and still killed birds.
PS your gonna like this. i know a guy who has hunted somewhat close to me and wears a blue hat, hunter orange jacket and blue jeans, and this guy stands right out in the open absolutely no cover i mean right in the open and has killed more birds then the guy's in camo hiding in the cat tails. this is no BS ive seen him do it at least 10+ times, so go figure?

THE ONLY THING I WOULD WATCH OUT FOR IS IF YOU HAVE A SHINY AFTERMARKET CHOKE TUBE LIKE A PATTERNMASTER ... YOU CAN GET THEM IN BLACK SO IF YOUR MUZZLE IS STICKING OUT FROM YOUR BLIND IT WONT FLARE BIRDS... THIS YEAR I WAS HUNTING IN C. ILL. AND HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO HAVE THE SUN RIGHT IN OUR FACE, MY DAD WAS HUNTING ABOUT 500 YDS AWAY AND CALLED ME.. HE SAID "EVERY TIME YOU CALL I CAN SEE THE GLARE OF THOSE FOILES CALLS " WHAT IT REALLY WAS IS THE GLARE OF MY PATTERNMASTER CATCHING THE SUN AS I WAS GETTING READY TO SHOOT

I have a black synthetic SBE and it is blued, so it isn't shiny. Good dull finish. I don't think they can pick that out.
But I wonder if they see my shiny-as-hell Patternmaster. :? It is starting to turn black, so I am trying to let it just get a light black coating on the outside of it. It's gonna look BADA$$ when my hat cam is looking down the barrel and every time I shoot, some sort of bird is falling. Ordered it yesterday, gonna smoke some crows with it on.
can u say (rattle can) and no more shinney

i was thinkin the same about black - because camo is like $90 more than a black gun

Camo adds a little more protection against water and corrosion.

HEY BARRY, WHAT KIND OF PAINT COULD YOU PUT ON A STAINLESS PM AND NOT HAVE IT SCRATCH RIGHT OFF ? DONT REALLY WANT TO SPEND THE $ ON NEW BLACK ONES
sand it with some 120 grit paper ,clean it with some brake cleaner, ect any thing that will remove the oils and powder residue. and use some flat black engine paint

THE PAINT WONT SCRATCH OFF ? I'LL TRY IT, THANKS FOR THE TIP
it might a little but let it dry real good, the reason i said engine paint is for the heat that the gun makes after shooting alot. also if 120 grit paper doesnt seem like its enough go a little courser so the paint has a good bond, it only takes a couple real lite coats. PS tape off the part that goes inside the gun and treads

Personally i look at it like this, think about all the trashbags, soda bottles, boxes, glass, TVs, refrigerators, washers and dryers, think about all the trash that ends up in a field by the time hunting season comes around, i cant tell you how many freakin wal mart bags ive picked up this season on state land, that the wind blows out of our shopping carts, directly to our hunting areas, all these Unnatural colors and shines in the fields, and still we kill geese, tho, this is an early season stupid goose responce, im sure the geese know the field that they have been shot at in, rather than that little piece of something shineing from the grass, take a ride to your local marsh and or cornfield and stop and count all the white bags, that are torn and mangled and scattered all over the fields, or marshgrass, and ask yourself is it my shiny new PM thats flareing geese, or is it my crappy calling.....lol...j-k, is it my decoy spread, is my Head down to heads up ratio correct, are my birds facing into the wind, is something casting a shadow, are the dekes moving funny.....to me theres prolly a thousand other things other than that shiny new PM thats gonna flare geese, it works just like the shiny silver bands on all our calls, if they get close enough to see that band....they should be full of steel and heading toward the ground...thats just my $.02....and im a rookie what do i know......

i really wouldnt worry about it. just giving you advise on how to do it. i shoot briley extended tubes stainless of course and never had an issue with that. at 30 yds it looks like a dime any how. there not gonna flare from that. also DropEm has a good point for a beginner only a couple years into the sport.

I agree with alot of what you said DROPEM, alot of times when those birds do get close enough to see somethings wrong, they should be dead. But I don't know about anyone else but when I get the chance to put a flock of mallards [ or geese, what ever your flavor] on the deck I don't want to take any chances. The simple truth is these birds are getting smarter and smarter... so why not spend 2.50 on a can of paint for alittle peace of mind ?

Have you thought about putting Camo Clad on your gun it costs like $25 and its pretty easy to put on your gun. It is totally removable and does a pretty good job. This may be a solution for you if you are worried about the gun sticking out. They have a ton of different camo patterns to choose from. Check out Macks Prarie Wings. They have it in stock

Luke is right...I saw his 870 and it looks like it was factory camoflaged until you look at it really closely.
Dropem, PM sent to you.

you could also try snake skin it is this new stuff that is basically like shrink wrap and it's camo you put it on and hit it with hair drier and it shrinks down to form fit the gun and it act's as a moisture barrier i don't know how well it works but it looks pretty good cabelas has it and it is like 12.00 so i mean it wouldn't hurt to try

I don't think a black barrel will flare anything; and, like DropEm said, if they're close enough to see it then they should be looking at the business end.
A buddy of mine has been an avid turkey hunter for 20 years, and he uses a black gun. He has 16 gobblers to his credit with his black gun. If you think geese have keen eyesight...
If it really bothers you, I would at least paint up the barrel like some of the guys suggested. FYI: regular spray paint comes right off with bore solvent but I would only use it on the barrel.
Over the years, plenty of birds have been taken with black guns. Honestly, I bought a camo gun because I think it looks cool. There, I admitted it.
Good luck.

I was thinking exactly the same thing and he beat me to it. I have shot a shiny patternmaster for 3 years now, along with my regular hunting buddy. We have yet to experience issues with these flaring birds. 300 dead birds a year can't lie.

Yeah all you guys are right , both my benellis are black syn. and I've really never had much of a problem with birds flaring cuz I hunt out of a boat blind....But I don't get to hunt much here in MI. maybe a few local potholes, so when I go to ILL, or SD, for a week I wanna take full advantage of every flock. But for the most part I would not worry much about the difference between a black or camo gun , they all kill' em

a bad camo job will flare birds. Like a shiny gun, for some reason the camo on my shotgun is shiny if relected right, so I try and hide it as much as I can.

now i dont know if anyone else saw this show, but i seen it last season, dont ask me what it was, but these guys were hunting, ( grant it in Canada ) but they were sitting in the middle of a snow goose spread on White patio chairs with the legs cut off mouted on swivels, in white cover suits, and they were popping canadians left and right, now like i said they were in canada, and they wernt shooting these birds at 20 yards, but they still limited out on snows and canadians.....no camo, no cover, just out in the open their guns laying on their laps, and a black lab, laying next to the guides chair.........now if that doesnt say something i dont know what does.......

yeah my uncle went to North Dakota and they had two opptions. 1. set up their 5 dozen mallards in a pothole and kill a fit limit of ducks..
2. sit in lawn chairs between a pothole and a lake, and they sat in the lawn chairs with no dekes at all and killed there limit of ducks...now thats crazy..oh yeah, they got within 20 yards..

I have camo guns and black guns, and both seem to kill birds fine. My black guns are matte black, so they dont cast off the shine that some of the the others do. If you are concerned about the six or eight inches of barrel hanging out of your layout, I would recommend you put on the "Strait Meat" barrel stickers in the gold color, this will break up the black just like camoflage. Most important thing is keep down the shine.
