I have an old 870 with a choke stuck in barrel, any idea of how to tell what choke is actually in the barrel without taking it out???

The standard bore of an 870 is around .730

Use a mic or dial caliper to gauge the (ID) of the choke at the end of the muzzle and use these specks as a refferance for choke constriction.

Constriction
.000 Cylinder
.005 Skeet
.010 Improved Cylinder
.015 Light Modified
.020 Modified
.025 Improved Modified
.030 Light Full

Gary, the notches aren't Remington. Rem just has the 4 cuts for the choke wrench, they don't have any markings on the end that you can tell with the choke in the barrel.

The only way that I've seen/heard of would be measuring like Barry said.

Benelli's have the notches in the choke and for getting it out, Try shooting it alot and while it is still hot try using a wrench and c if that works. It not soak it in oil over night and c what happens.

I agree that if you shoot it alotand try to get it out right after might be your best bet.And if not take the barrel off of the gun and spray some brake free or jus WD-40 on the choke and let it sit over night and try to get it out.If it is a dipped gun you might not want to use the break free on the paint stick with the WD-40.

After or if you get it out and you are going to still use the factory flush chokes in it one way to help from rusting is if you are shooting a mod. then get an aftermarket flush tube made of stainless steel.Carlson's makes them and sells them at most sporting good's stores and it will be easier to get out next time because even if the barrel starts to rust the thread's on the tube will not.

I bought a gun one time with a stuck tube. The shooting it alot did not work for me. So, I took the barrel off and filled a plastic cup (not styrofoam) with PB Blaster and put it in there. A few hours later it came right out with no problem at all.

I just had gander mountain gunsmith try to get a choke out of my beretta xtrema. They used an easy out and broke the choke inside the barrel. Then told me that I had two options. I could send the barrel to wi to their main shop and would get it back sometime after the season is over. Or I could buy a new barrel from them for $800. Both sound pretty crappy to me.

So I borrowed a buddies barrel for the weekend. I now have the barrel to a different gunsmith. I should find out what they are going to do. But they are going to try the easy out again. If that doesn't work they are going to cut and rethread the barrel. Bad deal.
