View Full Version : Shaving a Reed/Tuning A Call!
I recently bought a cheaper Short Reed Goose Call that came with a DVD that is supposed to teach you how to call. Needless to say, the guy on the video is a pro and just blows away and mentions that you might need to "Shave your Reed Down" but doesn't say how to do it or where to start....I tried to tune the call, but still can't get it to break over, I Get the Whooo Sound just fine, but can't get the Whit, so to speak. If I put the reed out farther over the whole, it just gets even harder to get it to break over, if I move it way down, it sounds like a damn snow goose or a lesser or something, any good tips from guys (other than buying a nicer call, because thats outta the question right now), would be greatly appreciated......

Shaving thins the reed out so that it will fold into the tone channel easier. It is not somthing that I advise you to do yourself if you havent been calling for a while. You just need to play with it and find the sweet spot. Once you find it take a marker and put marks on the reed and tone board so you can find that spot easier next time. More reed exposed= Deeper sound, Less Reed= Higher pitch. I suggest getting the Calling Geese 2.0 DVD
you only need to move the guts a tiny little bit at a time

in calling geese 2.0 jeff mentions to show you how to tune the call later....i didn't see him tune it in the movie...is it on the menu or something or just forgot to put it on there?

You shouldn't be saying whit into a short reed call. Keep your tongue behind your bottom teeth and say oo-ih. Whit is what you would say into a flute because it causes you to flip your tongue. I like to collect calls and usually buy the cheapies at Wal-Mart every year just to play with. From the call you are describing it sounds like the Knight&Hale Pit Boss. I haven't watched the video that comes with it but the reed definitely needs shaved. With their gut system it is hard to tune the call because it has a groove on the tone board for the wedge to sit in which leaves the same amount of reed exposed everytime. I prefer a to have less reed exposed because it is easier to break the reed and you can call faster. Just my opinion.
Your right, it is the Knight and Hale pit boss. Its not that I am saying Whit into the call, I am keeping my tongue firmly on the bottom of my mouth and when attempting to break it over, lifting the middle of my tongue quickly to the roof of my mouth. I had the call tuned ok, but it seems like everytime I pick it up it blows a different sound.....

BigR my girlfriend bought a pit boss over the summer and started to learn how to blow a short reed . When we got it home I played around with it , this call has keyed guts so you need to do alittle work to it to get it sounding good,on her call the reed was out past the tone channel . If thats your trouble you can either take a utility knife and cut the stops off the tone board or take a nail file and trim the reed so that it fits down into the tone channel. After getting the reed to fit down into the tone channel her call sounds alot better hope that helps .

one of my buddies bought one and it sounded horrible outa the box. So i messed around and ,like he said, cut those stops off and shaved it to were it fit in the channel and that call sounds really good.

HAHA i own that call and i actually bought the Acrylic Version call the Pit Magic, got it from dicks at the end of last season for like 25$s, usually its like 70, but its an awesome call but yeah their guts system is something else......so you all know what i did, grey guts in the pit boss, and Green guts in the pit magic, now they sing the pit magic call is SUPER light to blow cause the guts almost dont fit, but the sound that thing makes on the low end is rediculous.........and since i cant seem to get any decent sound on my MG, i put the grey guts in the poly and WOW....thats all i got to say......my advice would be dont attempt to shave the read, just order a grey guts system for a couple bucks, and make it sing.....
