Specks are usually plentiful down here on the coast usually from late Oct. on thru the season. Young ones (and almost all the other ones too) will respond to calls and decoys almost as willingly as ducks. Strait Spec is an awesome call - just wish Jeff (or anyone else) would put a little more instructional on a cd or dvd. I've been around some pretty accomplished speck callers and I beleive there is a little more to their language besides the laugh call HAH-HAH, HUH-HUH. GHG full body speck decoys are awesome too.

BTW - These specks are TASTY birds - definitely not sky carp. I think the specks y'all are dealing with are definitely mature birds.

Honkerhunter, my dad lives in southeast Iowa and he says there are alot around. He said while hunting last Sunday, they were seeing all kinds of snows!!! He says there are no snows that stayed, but some specks around.

I'm from central Illinois also. We had a group of around 100 come in on us the other day and we got our limit. This was my first spec and my buddies as well. Two weeks prior I saw around 30 on my buddies pond in his back yard. I had never seen them around here before as much as I have saw them this year.

Ah when all else fails pull out te 10 gauge and if that don't work wait till they land and smoke 'em with a rifle. LOL, JUST JOKIN' Don't you just hate those birds that are smart as hell, we have some canada's up hear that are damn near impossible to hunt.

Your first hunt of the year you will pound the crap out of them after that you could have the best callers and decoy spread and you will never limit out on them again. I think there is too many goose vetrans from the following years and they just know whats going on because they have been shot at year after year, sure seems like that any ways.

I'm with webfoot. Come spring snow goose season, they're all over us. Pintails, woodies and mallards, and honkers are all over us too. Had 5 specks almost land one day, then they headed towards the river and came back a little while later with a snow. The snow took a load of BB's pretty hard as they were all bowed up right above me. Coulda smacked 2 or 3 of the specks too, mayeb all of them if I had a magazine extension.

They have been in the Sac Valley since the opener. There were close to 300,000 here in Oct. Now there are over 1,000,000 in the Sac Valley. I hunt about 2 hours south of there and they just showed two weeks ago. We have been laying it to them ever since.

Layout hunting with 3 dozen DSD will do the trick here in CA. They don't see a whole lot of pressure outside of the rice.
