why do so many people get bands

It has to do with many factors. The first I believe is just pure luck, I shot a goose during our early season that has a $100 reward band, and a second that was almost 17 years old. Both which had been banded at our private marsh by the USGS. That is somthing to look forward to every year because you know that there are banded birds around, find banding locations if possible. When you start recieving migrators in your area go to a refuge where they are comfortable and watch them. If you have binoculars you should be able to see the bands. Find where they are going to feed and be there the next morning.
My opinion is that luck is the largest factor. With luck on your side you should be able to kill some bands. Hope that helps.

The first goose I ever killed was banded. 22 years later I have not killed another banded goose since.

Location, Location, Location and a little luck can't hurt
If you hunt in an area that has a heavy banding program you are going to shoot more banded birds.

Yeah most of its strait up luck. Kingkilla was with me when I shot my second one this year. I smoked 2 with 2 shots and the first one was banded. It was a 9 year old bird. Shot it at Saylorville. The best thing is Kingkilla was filming and got the whole thing on tape! You can see 'em and hear them hitting the water! Its almost like a short clip of Fallin' Skies 2! Well maybe not that crazy.

Those are my only two bands. When I was about 12 I missed a blue goose with a red neck tube and leg band while spring snowin' with my dad and his friends. My dad's buddy crushed it right after I shot with his 10 gauge. I was so mad. That would have been my first snow or blue!

Had a good year with bands this year. I shot 2 banded geese and 2 banded teal. Between 4 guys we shot 7 banded birds and I got 4 of them, pure luck. One goose was banded 12 years ago in Quebec Canada, the other 6 years ago , but was a local bird for Upstate NY.

I have been hunting for over 20 years and never shot a banded goose.
Then this year we shot our limit of 4 geese from 2 seperate flocks (2 out of each) and all 4 had bands on them :D
After we retrieved the first goose I told my buddy I never got a band in my life. We have a rule to that who evers field we are hunting in gets the bands. So then he sees the second band and is starting to feel guilty about keeping them both so he lets me shoot a clean double on the next flock and 2 more bands.
We were so pumped it was crazy.
Thanks
Hammer
I agree with king I think it is all about the luck.
