MARION - Thieves broke into a pair of goose pits at the Tim Grounds Hunting Club, located on Little Grassy Blacktop in rural Williamson County, earlier this week.

Grounds said he left the club shortly before sunset Sunday and returned about 4:30 a.m. Monday to set up decoys for a morning hunt. He discovered the theft at that time.

The thieves made off with five shotguns, including three Benellis and a Beretta, 200-300 rounds of Heavy Shot shells, a digital camera and hunting bags containing 10 to 15 calls belonging to Grounds and his son, Hunter.

Both Tim and Hunter Grounds are world championship callers.

"The big thing is, they got all his (Hunter's) bands," Grounds said. "My Benelli, the old one, and the bands, that's what really got me. I can't replace them.

"All his bands, including the one he killed when he was 7 years old. There were probably 25 to 30 bands."

Grounds estimated the loss at between $8,000 to $10,000.

There was no damage done to any of the pits, or the clubhouse. Several motorized decoys were scattered about, but were untouched.

"They came after the guns," Grounds said. "I don't think the calls mean anything to them.

Grounds said the thieves entered the club through an adjacent field.

He is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the thieves and the return of the stolen items.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Department is currently investigating the theft.

Anyone with information concerning the thefts is asked to contact the Williamson County Sheriff's Office at 997-6541 or the Williamson County Crimestoppers at (800) 414-TIPS.

Information which leads to an arrest could make the caller eligible for a cash reward. Those who contact the Crimestoppers are not required to leave a name or phone number.

I spoke with Juda....Tim's mother earlier today....
it is very SAD that someone would do this....Tim is a kind and generous man....undeserving of such shameless act....

the thief came back sometime over the weekend and returned Hunter's lanyard with all his bands........they left it on the ground next to Tim's truck so he would find it....at least they had the decency to do that!!!

It is an awful thing to happen to anybody. Glad to here young hunter got his lanyard back. I bet Tim locks his guns in a safe for now on. That part of Illionis is a small town, people will talk, and the perpetrators will get cought. A lesson we can all learn from this is to be careful about securing our gear after the hunt.

atleast Hunter gets those back. Still sounds like Grounds for a lynch mob. No pun intended, just my opinion. the funny thing is that is sounds like a local job. I am sure that this group of Morons will slip up and the word will get out and they will get busted. I just hope Tim and Hunter get all their stuff returned.

Inside job all the way..... Somebody knows something.... The scattering of the decoys was just to through the officials off to make it look like a random theft. They were going for the guns.

It was someone who works for these guys or is really close to them. Someone who needed the money real bad (the guns will show up at pawn shop very soon). Probably a couple of towns over though.......

I watch CSI. I now know everything about crime scene analysis...

Now that is funny...

Yeah, I agree completely that all of us hunters need to stick together, I personally don't agree with all of Tim's politics, and I remember him from 20 years or so back. But I still respect what he has done, and become, and will admit though they ain't Foiles, he does make a nice call, and does not deserve to be robbed. Hopefully they will catch the low life's and put them away for a while, after all we are looking at some serious charges with the theft of firearms.

Bad deal all the way around, glad Hunter got his bands back though.

Well, at least Hunter got his bands back. That's all I would care too much about. I mean lets face it, the Grounds family probably isnt short on $$. So they can just go buy a few more Benelli's. It's still a bad deal though. I hope they catch those SOB's!
