just letting you know, if you have ever hunted the Big Marsh, The former dnr that has been here for a long time has retired, they have a new guy that I have personally talked to. They normally keep Big Marsh drained in the summer then fill it about a month before season. But this year they will keep the west and the center piece filled with water, thats right filled. they were always wandering why they never had very good goose numbers, water is what they needed.

Keepin some water in there will make for higher teal numbers too!!!! I think they need to keep more of the marshes full of water to provide a feeding area for the ducks and geese.

hey there Big Marsh is pretty much the only place i hunt, it is located 30 to 35 miles west of the Waterloo, Cedar Falls area. I hunt in Big Marsh 3 to 4 times a week. yes they do have the early September goose season. and the early season is great. but the ducks get smart quick. You cant hunt for canadians in the marsh itself but anywere east you can. if any of you do make a trip here let me know and i can help any of you out, place to stay and all of that.

If I made a trip to Big Marsh! Do they have blinds already set up or do you have to have a boat blind? See I live in Spring Valley, Illinois about 1hr and 45 minutes from the Iowa boarder right on interstate 80. I was thinking on making a trip to Iowa for like a weekend just for the hell of it like a get a away thing could i get somemore info? Thanks

You have to have a boat blind, either that or walk in and set up. I havent heard of any Iowa marshes that have a draw for blinds but I could be wrong. I have only been using some of the public marshes for a couple of years, I normally hunted off of a private marsh but it was somtimes hit or miss. Most of the larger Iowa marshes all have some sort of refuge near them so there are ducks and geese around.

there are no blinds in big marsh. i hardly ever use a boat, i use the best blind you can make, use things that are in your surroundings. i have had ducks so close to the blind i could have kicked them. the closer we get to the refuge which is in the middle of the marsh itself
